2003 Ford Explorer Limite
Hi,
I have a 2003 Ford Explorer 4.7L V8 limited with about 155k miles. I have never had any problems with it until recently. All of a sudden it started stalling whenever I would come to a stop. No CEL and it would start right back up with no problem. I took it to the dealership and they told me it was the IAC. I had the IAC replaced and it no longer stalls but now it has a new problem. When you come to a stop and hit the brakes, the idle stays up, and it fights you(wants to accelerate) until you get to about 5mph, and then the idle will suddenly drop to normal, and you come to an abrupt stop, because you had to push the brakes so hard to fight the engine. It also has a rough idle (up and down) while sitting at a light etc. The CEL came on and the code was P0507. The mechanic replaced the IAC 2 more times just to make sure the new one wasnt faulty. My mechanic told me that the PCM just needed to be "flashed" and that I should take it back to the dealer. I took it to the dealer to have it flashed and now they are telling me that it cannot be flashed because there are "hard faults" and it needs a new PCM - $1300 of course. They cant tell me for sure that replacing the PCM will fix it but rather it is a "starting point". The dealer told me that all of the codes are P1568, P1703, and P0507

I am hoping someone can help or has had this problem because I cant just spend $1300 for something that "might" fix it.

I would try cleaning the MAF, and the Throttle Body and see if that helps. My uncle had an F-150 that had some idle issues, the Throttle Body plate was black, and I believe there's a small hole in them to let some air through during idle. It was pretty much plugged with the black stuff. Once we cleaned it, it idled like new.

I had a similar problem with my '03 4.0 and it was the PCV valve. Replaced it and my problem was solved.

Just an idea.

I have a similar problem on a 96 V8 explorer. Idle surge when stopped in town, drives good, stop, and sometimes it will idle to stall. Changed the EGR valve, Idle control, and cleaned out the mass flow sensor. Any ideas?

Sounds like the issue I had....the Mass Air Flow sensor was bad.
