I Need some experienced advice: I have a 93 exp xlt w/4.0L. Voltage? Fuel Sys? Tranny? My Voltage Gauge Drops and motor stalls/hiccups occasionaly throughout driving speed, no matter what speed even when not in gear. It is like a heavy miss or quick stall. I just replaced my wires, plugs and ignition coil, $150 later it still runs pretty much the same. Could it be related to the parts I just replaced? Injectors, Tranny? I'm a old school mechanic, and am wondering if I should buy a hand held computer to diagnose this FORD? Thank you for your time

I would replace both battery cables myself. Voltage drop = bad connection at battery or alternator. Check the connection of the grond cable where it meets the frame and then als o back where it meets the engine block by the oil filter. I have seen these bolts come loose.

These gen I's as they get older the cables get weaker, corrode, etc. It is a common problem. When you said voltage gage drops, then this happens thats what sent me thinking this way.
You can test the alternator and take a good look at the wiring.

Is the check engine light on? if the CEL is on then Autozone can scan the codes for you. this would be an emissions related sensor, 02's, EGR, etc.

Another common cause of surging or bucking on these trucks is the fuel pump relay and fuse. they get dirty/old etc and can cause the fuel pump to shut off at times for a second.

Also you can clean the MAS but typically this would be a constant problem , not intermittant.

If none of this checks out the next step is a manifold vacuum test and fuel rail pressure test, followed by a cylinder compression test :)

410, Thanks, I'll try that. and get back to ya!

Losing the battle Help

I once had an 86 ford f150 that would act in much the same way as your explorer. I found abrasions on the wires leading to the ignition. The wires were shorting out to ground and the truck would stall, once the short went away the truck would run fine. I reinsulated the wire and it fixed the problem. You might also want to replace the distributer cap as it could be causing problems.

Thank you both for the advice....I just went to autozone and used their code reader. It came up with the MAS and MAF, so I bought some elec clnr and the miss/hiccup went away. I also cleaned up my ignition coil and it still runs fine. I'm taking the new coil back + $90 in my pocket!! However I thought the O2 sensor code was on there too, however, the reader was a cbd I. Now I need to remedy the CEL, it's still on, O2 Sensor, tomorrow....
Thanx,

Oh, I tightened the Ground from the battery and checked all wiring. I cleaned all elec connections as well.
