2007 Ford Explorer EB
let me give you the whole story....

Last Sunday I installed a PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer on my 2007 EB Explorer with 89k miles, i did not disconnect the neg Bat terminal during install, and I drove it around all day with no problems and great throttle response.

Come Monday morning on my way into work I pull up to a stop light after the engine got up to full operating temperature and it started surging like it was trying to shift gears while I was stopped (the RPM's were not fluctuating at all during this). so every stop light I had to shift to neutral as it continued to get worse, and in some cases would occur when I tried to accelerate. mind you this entire time, no CEL or wrench light or anything showed up on the message center.

On my way home from work, i got on the freeway and it started acting up again, this time throwing the wrench light when I tried to accelerate to merge. I had no power to go anywhere so I pulled over and turned the car off and back on, and was able to make it home, but could not kick it into overdrive with out it starting to surge again. When I got home I took the TB spacer off thinking if I put it back to stock maybe that would help, but it didn't. At this point i disconnected the negative battery terminal thinking maybe this will reset things (not realizing that could screw thing sup even more with the TB itself)

Tuesday i took the EX to the dealership, they came back and told me I needed new TB ($500) and code P2112 which I was noting willing to accept as an answer and told them to find something else wrong. so they found a Cylinder 5 misfire P0305 and P0316 which is fine but I still knew that is not what was causing my surging problem. They did some more tests and came back saying I needed transmission work and that I should just get a re manufactured Transmission ($5500), I said you are out of your mind and took the EX and left for AAMCO.

AAMCO ran some more test all FREE of course compared to the $123 FORD charged me for telling me nothing. AAMCO came back with the P0305 and P0316 as well as U1900 and UI2023.

I'm going to fix the Cyl 5 misfire myself because that's a no brainer, but would the TB spacer really have caused all these other issues I'm having? I can't imagine it would but this is just blowing my mind that it ran fine all day on Sunday and then all of a sudden started acting up on Monday. Any thoughts on how to fix? Thanks for everyone's help.

no the spacer will not cause or help anything unless you need a place to drill for a nitrous kit... adding 2 inches of space will not do anything its all snake oil.... have you tried removing it and do a code reset... if anything has went bad its just a terrible coincidence not caused by a spacer plate.... I used a spacer plate of my 5.4 f150 to tap and install a 75 dry shot... before the kit the spacer did nothing but make my throttle linkage blow

I don't see why everyone is so against the spacers on these forums, I noticed a significant increase in throttle response immediately. I've had them on past vehicles as well and noticed the difference. Maybe its a vehicle by vehicle case, but I can't imagine PowerAid would continue wasting their money making them if they didn't prove to provide some significant difference when installed.

I did remove it Monday evening, i did not actually clear the codes, but I will try that tonight and see if that does anything for me after I fix the misfire.

its not wasting money on the production side since the markup margins are so high... its about the added CC's of airspace because of that spacer it is not enough to ever show a gain on a dyno.... i even used one on a 5.4 with a novi 2000 and it added nothing.... what most people do is get thick plastic trace out the TB and intake and cut it out and make your own spacer for like under $10.... I know back in 1999 when I dropped over $100 on a poweraid spacer It made me feel retarded as **** and the only way I could justify it was to tap it for my nitrous jet

Sound familiar? Caused by the TBS stretching the connector?
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2994832&postcount=10

If that's the case you may consider retracting this:

I'll take a look at that, it didn't seem like anything got stretched to me because there was plenty of slack in the wiring and lines from what I saw.

As far as retracting what I said about adding the TB spacer, I mean it worked for a day, why things what haywire after I'm still determined to find out, and when I get it running right again I will put the TB spacer back on and try it again. Could I add to it that hey this could potentially happen to you...sure, I'm willing to do that.

MotorCityFats13-if you prefer to make your own then that's great, I've never had a problem with buying the TB spacers so i just assume get something that is precise and professionally manufactured.

The article i read stated that if you wanted to get a noticeable difference in performance you would have to add over 1 litre of air space... This is only done with racing intake manifolds.. The spacer cant make anything flow better and only adds distance that it takes for the air to reach combustion there for lowering performance but since its such a small addition nothing changes... Looking back on my old truck i would of still bought one because it made for good conversation at car shows and was a great place to add my nitrous inlet... As for your problem the spacer woildnt cause any harm and removing it would not remedy the problems... Maybe is a bad case of coincidence

So instead of anyone actually providing any solid leads or help which is what I thought these forums were good for you are all just going to blast your opinions about the use of TB spacers.

I was hoping for some actual help on how to fix the problems my Ex is having. Thanks.

ok a different FORD dealer just came back and said the Mechatronics needs to be replaced in the Ex and that is what is causing the problems.

does this sounds familiar to anyone?

Well I got the Ex back last night and its running smoother than ever, still has the TB spacer on there and no issues so far!

I can promise you the first FORD dealership will be receiving a letter from me regarding the fact that they were not able to pin-point diagnose this issue like the other FORD dealership was, but they would rather have just charged me $5500 for a whole new transmission and $500 for a new TB.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.:thumbsup::D

question

problem solved with replacement mechatronic? Can I ask what they charged you for the repair? Thanks.

Yep, been running great, they charged $2800 to replace.:thumbdwn:

wow.... that is really expensive... I think I bought the wrong vehicle if repairs cost more than 25% of what I paid... I am really wondering what this part is and how much of the cost was labor because I have never heard of such a part... sounds like the flush pump for the blinker fluid if you ask me.

It's all the electronics within the transmission. You can't just replace a solenoid or the pieces individually, the whole thing has to be replaced at once. I'm sure a lot of it is labor being they have to disassemble some of the transmission and such.
