Help me ask about "auto" 4X4 problem

The auto 4X4 doesn't engage when the rear wheels slip. The system doesn't do anything automatically or otherwise with the knob in Auto. KK

OK, but in 4high it works fine, correct? If so, I'd suspect the Torque On Demand relay, but I can't honestly say for sure... The TOD relay only does what the GEM tells it to, so it could be a bad connection between the two, or the TOD relay could be getting bad info from the GEM. It's just tough to tell offhand... I wish I had a magic method to view the GEM PIDs, but unfortunately, it's just not possible. What you'd want to view is the duty cycle of the TOD relay to monitor it. Without that, it's a guessing game at best...

My wifes cousin says he has the "code reader" to check all of the vehicle computers; I'll see if he can really read them and if so it should make this an easier job. If this all works out, I'll keep the forum posted. KK

A standard code reader will not read the GEM trouble codes or be able to monitor the PIDs. The cheapest setup I know of for that was still over $700 (and is no longer available).

;) Call Ford and see if your explorer has the sensors on the transfer case. If they do, then replace them and your problem will be fixed. You can not get this part anywhere else besides the dealer. I can take a picture of the sensors and post it;) ;) if you want.;) ;)

I'll try that; I know the service guy at a local LM dealership. In fact, the LM dealer quotes lower prices on parts than the Ford dealer. Actually, I know a mechanic ( quite a few, really) at an independant garage that has Alldata CD manuals. I'll ask him for at least a description of the system. Maybe it has troubleshoot tips and check values KKl

It's been a while so just a quick update. I checked with a local garage that uses Snap-Ons diagnostic software and it said that to "manually" check the Auto system there are 81 checks that spanned 14 pages. I have to say that some amount of the 81 checks include some specific to '97 Explorers. My wife's cousin says he can check GEM codes or at least diagnose it with his reader. More later KK

A 98 Sport only has the sensor for the FRONT shaft in the t-case. For 98 they used the rear ABS sensor for the rear wheel speed sensor for both the ABS and the automatic 4x4.

If it was a speed sensor, odds are the system would detect two different wheel speeds and incorrectly engage the 4wd. In my readings on here, that tends to be the typical failure mode for the speed sensor(s).

Just thinking about this problem in the daylight, there are a few things that you could check just to see what the scoop is before taking it in: Pop the stereo out, but leave the 4wd switch connected. On the right side of the dash opening, you'll see the TOD relay:

That connector should have five wires to it. With the engine idling in park and the switch set to 4auto, you should have power to both LB/BK wires, and *some* voltage coming out of the brown wire. If you have power in but no power out, then the TOD relay is shot. If you don't have power in, then check fuse #4 (30A Maxi) in the power distribution box that feeds the accessory delay relay. (If you have a moonroof and the moonroof works, that tells us that the fuse is good, but the TOD relay or the accessory delay relay could still be bad)

The diagnostic procedure is lengthy, and the Snap-On unit should work well. It can't hurt to do some poking and prodding anyways.
