Ive got a 2000 XLT 4.0 SOHC with the stupid auto 4wd. Now.... I just today took out my front drive shaft as a test to see if it would solve my issue. When id accelerate at or above 40 mph i would get a crazy humming sound then a nice grinding/bucking feeling in the truck. Very hesitant as well. It almost feels as if it were kicking in to auto 4wd. Now since it had started the axle seal has now blown in the front diff. (blown after while) And its bull. All i can say is..... HELP!!

Also my other question is between both the front and rear drive shaft, ive got a decent amount of play and my U-Joints are good. Any opinions?

Lets first make sure we're all on the same page:

So when you remove the front driveshaft, you get a bucking/grinding feetling when you accelerate?

As for the play, are you talking about like rotational play? So like when you spin the rear driveshaft, it rotates a few degrees before it stops? Cauz if so, thats normal because the gear's teeths have some space between them.

before i removed the drive shaft it was doing it (humming grinding and bucking) and after i removed it it stopped. And as far as the play i figured id only get that along with the clunking because of bad u joints but i guess its good that its normal

bippity!

Okay well put the driveshaft back in and disconnect the transfer case's electrical connectors -- that will tell us if the vehicle is going into 4wd when its not supposed to.

I like i like!!! Would i be a retard if i asked if it was a particular plug? Id be doing it first thing in the morn so i wanna make shure im not walkin into a huge screw up. thanks and thats a good idea

just follow the wires that are coming out of the transfer case's shift motor -- that'll lead to the right plug.
