I bought my 1997 XLT second hand, and of course, murphy's law dictates that there will be no owner's manual with it. What I wish to know, is what the mode button on the information center is for, and what VAL=X means when I hold it down. Currently, it only displays outside ambient temperature. Should it do anything else? Please let me know.

I scored a manual for my '99 dirt cheap on eBay. It does have a lot of info on the info center in it. Might want to consider it.

Of the top of my head, I'm not really clear what you're asking. The message center is kind of a joke anyhow. Having owned 3 Explorers without it I can say with certainty I'd rather have the space taken up by the message center and also much preferred the manual HVAC to the manual.

Ok, I have the link to the owners manual PDF file but I cant get the link to work here. I PM'd the url to you.

Thanks for the link. I found the answer to the question I was asking, but I also learned that mine is not equipped with the fancy message center, just the ****ty compass and thermometer. :(

No way, that's a useful function. I've had it on 3/4 of my Explorers and it's something I actually use.
