I'm having problems with my wifes radio. I bought her a 94 XLT 4DR. I didn't come with a radio but I didn't care. Now I'm tryin to install a new CD player for her and I'm lost. I've got 3 wireing harnesses in the radio hole. One is def. power but I don't know what the other 2 are. I have no idea what radio it had before either. Any help would be great.

Are you trying to hardwire it or do you have an adapter kit? Do the harnesses still have their plugs or were they cut?

try this link, it might just answer some of your questions...:D

The plugs are there. Both plugs have 8 wires each. One is larger w/ 2 clips on either side. The other is small and looks similar to a CD changer plug.

Do you have three connectors PLUS the antenna?

Also, look in the cargo bay, on the passenger side. Is there a subwoofer near the tailgate? If there is a storage area (with a net), you don't have the subwoofer system.

If you're adventurous, you could pull the trim panel on the passenger side in the cargo bay. If there is a factory amp, that's where it would be. You might first check the fuse panel under the dash and see if there's a fuse where the "premium amplifier" would be (check the owners manual).

yes there are 3 plugs plus the antenna. No subwoffer and we don't have the owners manual. I'll check that out later on. Thanks.

Weird. Take a look at this link and see if your connectors resemble this:

I don't have a subwoofer system, but if I had to guess, I'd say your third connector is for a subwoofer (assuming it's stock). It's also possible that the former owner pulled out the HU and left the wiring behind, some of which may have been modified for an aftermarket setup of some kind.

If you can identify the power and ground leads that you need, it might be faster to run new wires for the speakers (and amp if you're using one) than to try and decipher this.

Somethings wrong with the information in that link. Look at the White w/ blue stripe. How can it be both for RightRear + and Left Rear +. 1st page, Typical ford in dash wire color column. Somethings not right there.

maybe one of the sets is for the rear controls if you have them... i know i have an extra connector behind my HU and my rear controls dont work anymore...

Good possibility, did they offer rear controls on Gen1 Explorers?

I agree, that link gives me more questions than answers, I just used it so he could see if the connectors looked stock or may be something aftermarket from a prior owner.

I still say, at this point, you'll be saving yourself time and effort by getting a good Ford wiring diagram, and cutting and splicing in a new HU.
