my drivers outside door handle started becominc hard to pull up about a month ago, would pull easy at first then at the top of your pull where it would actually pop door open you had to pull harder. i knew i hadto be careful be cause it would break and alas it did.since then i have put 3 more on all breaking within a few days. i have changed the adjustment on the internal clip that holds to the rod that actually pops the door open and it got somewhat easier but still broken handle. will say this though. my local parts store charged me $39 bucks for the first one and after each break he redone my 30 daywarranty because he said so many ex and mount. owners are having this problem. anyone have this problem and solved it. let me know. i want my easy opening door back. anyone need there handle changed im an expert installer, just dont ask me how to remedy it. so freakin annoying

jt thomas,

The Door Handle, Door Latch Assembly, and Door Hinges are weak links on the 95-01 Explorer - did I leave anything out - LOL!!!

It sounds like your door latch assembly is on the way out. Typically, for a few days it is hard to get the door to "respond" to your pulling on the handle and trying to get it opened.

Ultimately, at least in my experience with what has happened on BOTH the drivers and passengers door, is that one day you close either door, and then you can't it to open with EITHER door handle - outside or inside.

The weak link in the latch is a .05 spring that breaks...

The rest of the story is a nightmare - don't ask - LOL!!!!

No, the original handles were fine - they last 10 years in the cars.
The "new" chinese crap is what's wrong. I did replace twice the interior handle on the rear passanger side with chinese parts and my child broke them each in 1 week. I put in a Motrocraft one and it is still there, doing it's job.

I vote for the latch assembly also. You might buy some time by spraying it down with WD40, both where it closes around the door post and from the inside with the door skin off, but that will just be temporary.

Replacing the latch mechanism is a PITA, but when it does fail the door will not open from inside or out, so don't wait too long. I had a rear door fail and finally had to pay dealer about $200 just to get it open. I believe that you will have to dismount the lock actuator to get it unhooked from the latch mechanism. Plus dismount/disconnect both inside and outside handles and lock rods. Access is difficult, especially if you have big hands, but it is doable. Good luck.

i was surprised to find out that after i installed another one that i would try to use white lithium grease from the spray can and whalah.... works as good as new! thanks for the help guys. white lithium grease wow who knew

Yeah, I spray wd40 in every month or two and it works
