Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to replace the rear timing chain tensioner for a 2001 4L SOHC? If anyone has a how-to guide on how to get this done it would be really appreciated. I have tried searching and looking in the how to section here but did not find anything.

Many thanks in advance.

I will be doing that exact job today on mine!
The part number is F4822190 from Fords-cost was £30.93 inc vat. They surprised me from buying on the phone to calling me saying it was in- was 24 hours!
The job itself is easy, remove the liner in the wheel arch and then look for the timing bolt- visible from the arch area, you will need a good decent drive socket set and may find it very hard to loosen- once it releases its simply a case of take out and replace using the old washer after you have made sure it is flat and not scored too bad. tighten well and before you start make sure you have the correct oil level in the engine- as they are hydraulic and require the oil pressure to work well.

OK done the replacement of the rear chain tensioner, I removed the arch liner and set to it from underneath- but could not get enough leverage from there- I went in from the top instead- its tight and awkward but I managed to remove the old one- it was impossible to put the new one in from the top as I could not get pressure on it to compress the spring enough to let the threads bite!
It had to go in from underneath, be sure you have the OLD washer on the new tension bolt before you run it in the threads.- it was easy to compress the part and turn it to tighten.
On start up the engine was really noisy- this got better and better as it ran for around five mins.......I think the oil pressure has to build in the tensioner the first time- I am happy to say that I think it was worth doing as the rattling noise has now gone from that area.

The lesson, you need a 27m deep socket on a 3/4 inch drive and a very long extension- dont think about using a 1/2 inch drive as all you will have is torsion twist as the bolt is really tight. Also be prepared for a certain amount of oil spill onto the exhaust if you have not tightened it enough- If thats the case after you have tightened it up and started the engine- dont be alarmed with the amount of smoke as the oil burns off.
Good luck and take your time.

is this my problem too?

my 03 trac hs recently started making a rattling noise at moderate acceleration. around 2500 to 3000 rpm. i had a assumed that it was ting chains, as my trac has 227000 kms on it. do these sound like your symptoms prior to the repair?

would you mind doing a full write up with pictures for the rest of us. i was under the impression you had to pull the motor to the job

I would be glad to do a write up. My cousin is a mechaninc, and he was telling me that at a shop, they would pull the motor. however I have also heard that it is possible to do from the wheel well.

Rear tensioner change 4.0 SOHC

So, any progress on this? I'm needing to do this also and it's got me totally stymied. I can't see how you do this and my Haynes manual is terrible (pay attention here Haynes!). I can't see how you get into this from the rear without tearing out either the engine or the tranny--one of the other! It'd really appreciate it if someone would post some video and/or photos, please?

Bump,
If this is possible I'd like to see it. Add to the wealth of knowledge here on the forum.

98 Explorer Sport V6 DOHC

my brother was driving my car home the other day, and he noticed that the oil guage dropped very fast, so he pulled over, and as soon as he put the car in park, it stalled. We tried starting it after that, but it sounds like the engine isnt trying to start. I just went outside and tried to start it again,it wanted to this time, but still didnt. when it was running there was a very loud ticking noise coming from the back of my engine, i was told it could be the timing chain, or the catalytic converter. any ideas would be very much appreciated.
