Ok so I have a 01 explorer sport 4x4 4.0L v6 and I'm on the highway on my way to work doing about 75 on cruise control and suddenly my truck starts slowing down. I pull over to the right lane and it keeps slowing down until I have the gas pedal pushed all the way down to the floor and its still not giving me any power. I pull off to the side of the road, turn off the truck start it and try again. Its only doing about 20 mph at this point and progressively slows down to a dead stop. The cop that pulled over to help said it was the fuel pump. Is he right or is this not enough information to diagnose the problem? Any other suggestions as to what it might be?

I have the same exact problem, I replaced the fuel pump with the help of someone on this forum and it started right away. I'm having someone look at it today for a second opinion and a professional one. I will report tonight.

Can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on? Does the engine run at idle? Does it rev up when not in gear? Do you have any fuel at the schrader valve on the fuel rail with the key on and the engine not running? Could quite possibly be the fuel pump. Could be a plugged fuel filter.

turns out it was the cats. they are clogged to hell. does anyone know where I can get them for cheap?

IF you got a 2001 and the cats are clogged, replacing them without fixing the problem that caused the clog will likely result in the same "replacement". You likely have a fuel/firing issue which caused your cats grief.

Which cats are clogged?

Do you have the small cats in the downpipes as well as the main cats in the exhaust pipe under the truck? I bought replacement cats from www.performance-curve.com Each one I bought was under $40...I found a shop to weld them in place and have not been happier...

And as stated by Budwich, addressing any issues with the fuel or ignition systems should be done since their failures will probably be the first cause of clogged cats...

A few months ago I had a 4th cylinder misfire (has been fixed) which I'm assuming was the culprit of the problem. ranger thanks for the link, and yes I do have the small cats on the downpipe as well as the other two right before the exhaust.
