I have a problem with my '99 Explorer. I have replaced my pulleys and tension assembly and and serpentine belt and I still have this winding sound. It seems to be coming from the rear of the engine. It is not constant but it happens after I have driven it for a while or upon starting it at times. I'm at a lost for trying to figure out what the problem is. Can anyone help?

Remove the serpentine belt and run the engine for a minute or two without the belt. (it won't overheat that quickly) and listen close. If the noise is from the belt or belt driven accessory, you won't hear it. If you have the noise with the belt off, you have to start looking elsewhere.

Look into the timing chain tensioner if you have the 4.0L SOHC engine.

Is it possible that the noise is coming from the transmission? Mine makes a whistling/whining noise after it warms up. It does it more when it's in gear, but it'll do it anytime it's warm. There is a TSB written about it. There's an orifice in the valve body separator plate that is undersized that causes the noise when fluid passes through it. The dealer assured me it causes no problems other than the whistling sound.
