i just purchased a used 93 xlt 2wd it has 238km roughly
148is miles

i got it from a dealer cert and etested
it hasnt been a mth and i find out i have a small leak
i cant tell wether its oil or tranny leak...
ive found 3 spots this morning in my parking spot
i went under the car and looked at the connection of the tranny to the motor and saw fresh oil... once again i cant tell if its motor or tranny,, i checked the tranny fluid its not red its more like yellowish... the car is not giving me any trouble at all but the leaks are bothering me big time, i also notice that the starter is all black from old oil... and also saw couple of green drops beside the starter.. seems like coolant got there somehow so now im thinking its the head also??

can anyone gimme advice here... i cant really fork out anymore money into the car and ive only had it for 3 weeks is the dealer actually liable for this?? also i bought a power train warranty which sadly doesnt include any sealants or gaskets...
sorry about the long thread

usually a cert used vehicle comes with a 3mo/3000 mi warr....at least here it does.

if you bought a powertrain warr, that should include all trand parts (cept clutch in my case) as well as engine and all internal parts...at least thats what mine covered. IF its a head gasket, it should cover it.

i would say:

1) to my knowledge, most 4.0 OHVs use a little oil, be it a small leak or burn. i know both of ours do.
2) its july. my puke tank keeps sending coolant everywhere..that happens sometimes. what you need towatch it the temp gauge and the tail pipe when running.
3) trans fluid is red, except when dirty...then its black. but, what color is synthetic trans fliud? i dont know, but i would bet they flushed it and put synthetic in.

the tranny fluid is almost clear.. when wipe with paper towel its yellowish.. the gauges are all fine.. the heat sensor is always at normal.. i checked my engine oil its all nice no burn smell.. the tranny fluid is the cross hatch of the dipstick.. its not gusshing fluids on the ground but im just worried.. the car performs perfect...

if its clear, and looks pale yellow on a paper towel, then its brake fluid. check to see if the master cylinder is leaking, or the lines around that area.

it is clear and yellowish brownish.. and the leak seems to be at the driverside of the truck, like i said the starter is all black from it... i checked the brake fluid resorvoir and its fill... could it be the power steering fluid...
like i said it seems to be originating from the left side
also i just disconnected my abs 2 days ago.. bcoz of the abs light goes on whenever i wash the car.. so i know its a loose sensor also the abs activates on dry road...
could it be because i disabled the abs? all i did was take out the fuse..

the clear yellow liquid is right out of the tranny correct not whats leaking? james t im just confused on your post and trying to gain knowledge on what you mean.

yes, it could also very well be power steering fluid.

ok so im assuming here
leak from left side could be brake or power steering fluid... also i saw a cable wire running across my tranny from the bottom.. what is that?? its covered in gunk.. im not sure what it was.. anyhow whatever is leaking in my truck im just hoping to god its not transmission fluid!!
ive been reading about the front seal im very skurred

one more question...

i turn on the car while its parked to observe for some leak and i dont see anything..

if its the tranny.. does it only leak when the truck is on drive and running?

if its the brakes when the brakes are engaed (pumped)

im paranoid about this leak ;(

but i dont wanna get ript off if i take it to a shop
and the first things that come out of there mouth is
o u should replacec this too and that

hard to find good mechanics this days who arent just after the good old buck

anyone?

I have a 94 and feel your pain....

I live with a small oil leak...seems to be coming from the front of the head on teh drivers side....doesnt leak very much...a few drops a night, and so far it has stayed ok...plus I use synthetic oil which increases leakiness in older cars I have hear....

That cable going across the bottom is soaked on mine too...mostly engine oil...

A couple years back I was on vacation in it and it staretd leaking tranny fluid a bit...just a few drops....by the time two days had passed, it turned into a gusher on the beach...tranny replacement time. That sucked.

My heart goes out to you...check to be sure you dont have a warranty and good luck......if its just a drop or two just watch it....if it gets worse, have a tranny shop check it if its red fluid.....

im leaking tranny fluid.. i checked my dipstick had another guy look at it he was like yea ur burning tranny oil.. i have a feeling the tranny oil hasnt been replaced in a long time its not black but on the stick it looks clear and when i wiped it its brownish on the paper towel...

i added prolly 1 cup of tranny fluid... and will definetly watch for leaks.. thing is it doesnt leak all the time.. or the leak is so slow that its just running from the parts and taking a long time to drop on the ground...

will a tranny stop leak help???

also im thinking of changing some of the old tranny fluid
my idea is stick a tube in the tranny dipstick tube and sucking some of the fluid and replacing it out with new one? will that be ok???

thanks

I need help

Ok, I just got this truck and I need to know what are the best tires to get for my truck.I go off road a lot. I was thinkin about some wrangler mt/s. They look badd ass and i think i won't get stuck in the sand or mud with them. PLus where can i find a lift kit or a sweet body kit. What are some things that i could do to it. I already put hyper white lights all around so i can see off road. PLeas help me i got the money to spend but don't know where to start!!!!!!!!!!

Your IFS lift options (you can search for all of these):
Superlift 4" Suspension Lift
2" or 3" bodylift
Warrior WAR-153 Shackles + TT (torsion twist) = 1.5" lift

That is basically from most expensive to least.

You can also do a SAS or solid axle swap... where you ditch the IFS completly and go with a D30 or D44... its $$$ but done right is the best offroad setup you can possibly do.

A selectable locker is a really good idea for mudding or rock climbing... you can easily add one to the rear. Two good companies are Detroit and ARB.

Also, I would probably shy away from those tires.... the guys I know that had them had horrible weird irregular tread wear, and they always sounded loud (even for a MT)

Good luck!

EDIT: See how you went off-topic? Thats called 'thread hijacking'... next time you have some random question, try searching first, then if you dont find anything, post it as a new topic in the appropriate forum ;)

Ok if MT's arn't good what should i get. I wanna try and make it look mean. Now i mostly drive on road and sand thats really it not much other than that, I just want it to stand out form every other ex out there

ok wtf.???
why not make your own thread?
thats really rude of u!

LOL. liljang probably doesn't know the way around the site too much. That's funny though. :D

tranny fluid

I dont think the dipstick method is the best way.....dropping teh pan is better so you can clean out sludge/kaka that is there....

I am considering having a full reverse flush deal done....more money but gets ALL the fluid, not just what is in the pan....

<grin> I did my last tranny fluid chaneg and 3-5 months later I needed a tranny anyways.....

He must be one of those people who walks up to a group of people having a conversation and just starts spouting BS about nothing, interupting the converstion....

To get you back on track... Check the vacuum modulator on the tranny. If that goes bad, you will suck tranny fluid into the engine... thus losing fluid. Common problem on the A4LD and fairly easy to fix. Search for it and you should find lots of threads about it. I think there is also a writup on how to replace on the singleton maintenance site.
