91 Explorer Sold-now a YJ
I was just going to replace the head gaskets and now I'm into an almost complete rebuild. I have the engine on a stand and I need help with part sources. The cam shows lots of wear and two lifters were broken. I plan on installing new rings and gaskets while I have it out. Since the oil pan was leaking. What a mess. I tried carparts.com and they have a lifter and cam kit for $470. Who has that set cheaper? Please someone help me out here. I'm sending in the heads to get checked for cracks this week and the engine gets torn down as well.
Thank you in advance for any help you can shed on this situation.

Check Vanir for the lifters 190 or so, cams are around 150. So price isnt that bad. Have you checked for a coupon- plenty floating around on this site, fourwheel mags, just about anywhere. Maybe it could be reground- cost may be less I dont know. Performance cams (Comp cams, Cam craft) are 200 - 300 plus some extra work to get the pushrods lengthened.

Whats the link to the cam and lifters on Carparts. I didnt see any there when I was looking- but they change what they carry often it seems

If your cam is that bad better take a real good look at the rest of the Vtrain, push rods, rockers and shaft, even valve springs.

Good luck

I don't know where you could find the parts you need any cheaper but, I wouldn't suggest ordering off of carparts.com. With my experiance and other peoples opinion on it, your more likely to get the wrong parts or end up waiting 2 months to get the parts. Thats just my 2 cents.

You didn't say how many miles were on the motor, or why you were changing the head gaskets. While it's torn down you might just want to rebuild it all together if there is a lot of miles on it. But if you want to get out as cheap as you can, you should have the machine shop take the heads apart and check the valve guides, seals, and valves, just to make sure they're ok. Also, while the motor is torn down, you should also put in a new oil pump, rings, bearings, and timing chain or gears. This should eliminate problems down the road. Just remember, if the motor is worn out, it's not worth going through it if you're not going to do it right.

The problems I ran into with my engine were; leaking intake, leaking valve covers, lose of coolant, noisy lifters, noisy valves all with 150K's on the engine. I bought it used for a great price. Now I'm paying a little to fix it right. Well the engine rebuild kit is on it's way. Also found a crack in the one head so they went off to get redone. I had the head repaired, complete valve job, resurfacing and cleaning done to the heads for $170... Not a bad price. The cylinders have been honed, ridges reamed and I've been cleaning all the parts to reassemble the engine. The wife thinks I'm crazy but hey what are vehicles for if you can't work on them. Thanks for the tips and help..this is a great site.
