Well sunday i did several things to my X, the easiest of which i thought would be changin her oil....boy was i wrong.

Everything was going fine, i finished it up, and asked my girlfriend to start it up so i could check for leaks..
she started it....and i cleaned up a few various items..a minute later i heard a loud liquid dripping sound...i turned around and looked under my truck to see oil pouring out all over the ground. I quickly shut the truck off and climbed under it to see what the dilly yo. the drain plug was in and filter on snug. I thought maybe the filter wasn't on good enough. So i tighten it just a hair more. tried again.......no luck still leaked out.

so i ended up draining all the oil back out, pullin the oil filter off. once the filter was off i tipped it to empty any oil that might have been in it...and the gasket fell off into the oil pan....bam there in lay my problem.

so i had to run back to wal mart and get a new oil filter....not a motorcraft one this time. and 2 more quarts of oil. this time everything worked fine.

what a good time ...;)

That's spooky.

What's funny is that you said "what the dilly yo". LOL!

did they give you a new filter or did you have to buy another

Did the same thing a while back - problem was gasket from the old filter stayed stuck on - two gaskets is apparently too much.
year and a half later, still have a big oil spot in he driveway.

just some FYI-
dont know about the Motorcrafts, but Napa filters DO NOT have the gasket glued onto the filter. you have to make sure the gasket is in position and lined up as you tighten down the filter. a small dab of grease works well. Motorcraft filters may be the same way.

i've used motorocraft filters in the past with no compliants. but you can be sure now i won't use them again.

i had ot buy a new filter...but you can be sure that this weekend i'll be writing a letter to motorcraft...they could have been buying me a new engine...but luckly i checked everything before i left my house in my X

I had the same kind of thing happen to me once. The old gasket stuck on the X and I put the new one over the old one. You can pull the filter off the X without leaking out much oil so you don't have to drain it to change the filter.

I check my gasket now when the filter comes off and then check the new one when the filter goes on. This has solved any problems since then.

With two gaskets the X leaked like a stuck pig.

It happened to me once too!! I spent $26 on a case of Mobile 1 5W30 and $6 on Purolator filter. After I did everything and made sure it wasn't leaking. I started the engine and the oil guage never registered any oil pressure and all of a sudden, I heard some sort of liquids dripping...hard!! So I was like "S***!!!" and shut off the engine. Looked under and found a huge pool of oil. Well...$32 down the drain. I asked my dad to take me out to Wal-Mart (1 am) and got some oil. Another $32 later, everything back to normal. So in total, a $64 oil change. It was the most expensive oil change I've ever done.

I still don't know what caused it. No gasket was stuck there so that's not the problem. But I remember I dropped the filter on the ground pretty hard. It must've been a 4 or 5 foot drop. I guess I screwd that up.

P.S. I'm still a Purolator user. It only happened once. What are the chances of it happening again?? I'm thinking slim to none. It's a very good filter.

96EBX,
Why were you changing your oil at 1 AM?

I bet that's the problem. He went out drinking, came home, and decided to change his oil.;)

Haha...neh. I remember I had to work earlier that night. I don't think I got home until 12 midnight and since my truck's oil was overdue for more than 2000 miles and my truck's computer kept telling me to change my friggin oil so I decided to change it that night. And this happened so I got my dad and we went to wally world for some oil.

Well, that's one reason...

I let someone else do the dirty work for $15 or so...it's their liability.

A friend of mine picked up his Expedition from Firestone, drove off about 500 feet and the engine seized up!..Yep, no oil in the crankcase! That was was an expensive fix for Firestone, thousands of $$$$ for a new engine!

Had it happen to me once also. As far as I could tell the threads on the new filter werent square or I cross-threaded it as the old gasket came off with the old filter. I have since switched back to the Motorcraft filter.

yeah its easier to let someone eles do it. but i like my workmanship and quality :)

Yeah i under stand...

and that way you know exactly what's going on under the hood, good point!

For me it just depends on the weather. If it's nice outside, yeah I'll change it. If it's snowing/raining, I'll let somebody else do the dirty work.

Man oh man...that's why I love to have a garage in the basement. Temperature is constant at around 60 degrees year-round. That means I change my oil all the time. :D

I don't like other people changing my oil. Why pay $25, 26 for cheap dino oil and cheap filter while I can get Mobil1 and Purolator for a few dollars more?? Totally not worth letting others change it in my book. Plus, if I see any problems, I see them right away and get them fixed while others don't even care.
