was driving and noticed that my temp gauge on the high end. turned on the heater to let some heat out. helped a little till, just enough to get me home. luckily it did not blow it's top off! after a cooldown, i checked the coolant reservoir looked ok. my guess it's the water pump. or something. does anyone out there have any suggestions what i need to look at also. i knew something was up earlier during the day when everytime i would coast to a stop, it seems like the engine would surge! please help!

Your thermostat is probably stuck closed. My '97 had it happen last March. I would start there before replacing the water pump. You can check your water pump for any signs of leakage though. If it is leaking, you might want to go ahead and change it too. My water pump started leaking last december, however it didn't affect my engine temperature though. My thermostat did.
