Help this lift

Ok here goes What is all this that I have heard about shackles? I am interested in gaining as much as I can with a twist and keeping the vehicle level. The Explorers seem to have a heavy butt. I wanted to put on 31x10.5x15's on but I am just a confused soul. From what I understand the AT's(goodyear)31's will fit without trimming, I still want to go up. possibly a body lift of 1-2'' Again I am an idiot when it comes to all of this. I think I need to stop at my local 4x4 shop and get some advice. Around here though there are no lifted Explorers to hear of only pickups

Shackles seem to be a way to gain about 1.5" of lift for most people. They simply replace the stock ones with longer ones pushing the rear end up. They do tend to wear out the springs faster though. You also could use add-a-leaf too if you wanted to.

don't go to 4x4 shop

just in my experience, the 4x4 shops will not respond to you in a way you are going to like. you can get all your questions answered here. most '97 drivers only looking for a little lift are doing the torsion bar twist up front and doing the add-a-leaf or wp shackles in the rear. I'm not sure if just the add-a-leaf will give you enough rear lift, bit it would give you the cleanest look. I have the shackles and add-a-leafs for a combined lift of 3 1/2 inches. I've heard of guys with the newer trucks running 33's with just Torsion twist and shackles. Some of them don't like the ride...much stiffer up front. I'd do a search on these topics...i know they've been discussed thuroughly. good luck and happy x-plor'n!

just my $0.02:

i like the tighter front end with the torsion twist much better -- not dip, no lean, no nothing -- much more stable ride
