Year, Model & Trim Level
1996 4.0L 4x4 Ed bauer
I was driving. Came to a stop sign. Turned right. Trans shifted into 2nd,then slipped its way into 3rd. And progressively got worse. It stopped pulling all together. And when it would pull it sounded like chunks of steel in a grinder. Reverse pulls a tiny little bit but thats all it will do. Its a 1996 eddie bauer edition 4.0L 6 cyl, 4X4 , 5R55E trans. What the he'll happened do you guys think?

How’s the fluid level and color look on the dipstick?

does it move in 4Lo?

Not that it really matters, but wouldn't a '96 be a 4R55? As other's have suggested, look into your T-case first.

It was overfilled when i bought it and dumba** me forgot about it and ran it for the whole time ove had it about a year. It was about 2 quarts past full it looked. But the fluid is black and grey. Def not red anymore. I can start it and put it into drive and its just makes a high pitch whine.

It does not. I tried the transfer case and heard the servo engaging with no luck, which i had been having problems with the fron axle not pulling for a while now

ALSO. The trans code on the door is T. Thus referring its a 4r55e. And i have a 2 wheel drive 1995 with trans code T. But it being 2 wheel drive it wont mount up with the transfer case will it?

Tcase won’t bolt up to a 2wd trans.
I believe the 4R55E is basically an updated a4ld. On the a4ld, the 4wd tailshaft can be swapped onto a 2wd version with a little work. Maybe the same for the 4R55E?

cant i swap tail shaft from the 4wd to it so it will mount to the trans case?

Yes it requires complete disassembly from the pump back.
