I finally got around to doing TSB 03-22-10, to correct a sloppy 2-3 shift issue and no engine braking in 1st ('99 Explorer SOHC 5sp). What a pain to drop the left Cat, bolts were frozen.

Anyway, I followed the instructions, replaced the separator plate, replaced one valve, discarded the small screen and one small spring/valve, reassembled, and...

I put it in rev to back off the ramps, and it went forward! I put it in nuetral, that was forward too! Drive also goes forward.

What did I screw up? I think it would have helped if I didn't break my drop light and tried to do the whole job with a half dead rechargable flashlight that lasts 15 min between charges. that said, what might I have missed putting this thing back together in the dark?

I'm desperate, help! I'm going to drop the pan again now to take a look (after a trip to HD for a new drop light), but not sure what I'm looking for.

Sounds like you forgot to hook up the manual valve....

Well, since I don't know what the manual valve is, there is a pretty good chance I failed to reconnect it :O Off to search for what a manual valve is...

OK, it apparently has something to do with a Z bar, whatever that is, more searching...

Oh, a picture, great, the Z bar is the connection between the interal shift lever mechanism and the valve body, the manual valve is the VB piston that the shift lever moves...

Uh, oh, I don't see my Zbar, wait, my tranny is different, the detented bracket has a stud coming off it that apparently directly engages a grove in the piston, no Z bar, just engage the stud to the 'manual valve' piston, and I should be good to go!

OK, pan is on, fluid is in, and...

truck now goes forward AND backwards, woo hoo!

Wow, its amazing the instant help you can get these days from thousands of miles away!

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!
