Help!! Vanishing Transmission Fluid

For the last few months I have been trying to find out where the ATF for my '92 X is going. I fill it full and then within 3,000 miles it is dry (won't engage). This is the third round and I am now lost. There are no leaks. I've gone as far as putting white cardboard on the garage floor and it is dry. As far as I know the tranny can't burn ATF. So, any suggestions? Just filled up again today ...

Check the modulator valve. They will suck fluid right into your intake and burn it if they are bad.

do a search and use the term modulator. You'll find lots of info. Based on your description I am pertty certain your modulator needs to be replaced. May I recommend this task to a shop? Do a search and you will find out why.

Yep sounds like your tranny modulator. Cost about $70 to have a shop do it.

Last night I pulled the vac hose that runs to the modulator and it is covered in ATF on the inside. Confirmation that this is my problem.

So one more question before I replace it (yes, I'm a sucker for punnishment). Seems as if there are some opinions about not replacing it on old trannies. Mine has 156,000 miles on it and never been touched! Will replacing the modultor "induce" additional problems? If yes, then what are the drawbacks to just keep letting the engine burn the fluid (I guess everything will die at some point ...).

I have heard that wives tale. I cannot fathom why a properly working throttle valve as compared to one not working correctly would degrade performance. Do it. Hang onto the old one if you are worried you could always put it back in. I'm betting you won't feel the need. <g>
