2006 Ford Explorer XLT
:exp: Hello All I have been lurking on the forums for a while and just checking out tips and issues and what not but now I have a question I just recently got an 2006 Ford Explorer XLT, and I have not had one before this is my first explorer although my parents had them growing up and my grandmother still has her 2000 XLT with over 166,000 miles on it. Anyone long story short Ive always had 4Cyl Cars I just got rid of my fiancees 2door honda civic for the Explorer it has 80,000 Miles on it It is very very clean in side and out I really love it and wish to stay up on this vehicle with anything it needs so my issues is this. First thing is when we start it up I notice that the RPM Needle just moves a little bit like a vibration and it only bounces like in between one tiny notch and the other so nothing really crazy. And Secondly I noticed that when shifting through gears It starts out in First going to 3,000 RPMs then staying in the 3,000 RPM Range almost all the way through before it drops back down to 1 and 2,000 I have managed to capture a video of this from a red light on and I will upload it here so you guys can know what I am talking about I am just a little bothered because I am not sure if this is normal or not as all my other cars have stayed between 1 an 2,000 RPMS through the gears but like I said this is my first big engine car it is a V6 4.0L Just a little curious. Sorry if this thread is long and dragged out I wish to give as much information as possible to ease my mind. So any ideas or theories would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah one more thing the other day when I started the car up it was bouncing the RPM Needle from 1 to 2,000 RPM and there was some shaking and vibration in the car but it was only during start up then once we put it in drive and went to a red light it went away but the check engine light came on and then we took it home for the night to take it to the shop the next morning to find that the check engine light had went out and the problem went away very weird. Thank you Very much

Also this does have a Tow Package if that means anything and when the gears shift through they feel like they are powering forward instead of a slight pause.

The shifting and RPM range look normal to me. That is approximately how mine shifts and runs. The gearing on these things seems very truck-like and yours probably feels even more like that since you have the tow package.

I cannot comment on the CEL episode - sorry.

Thank you that is all I wanted to know I just needed a peace of mind if this was normal or maybe something was wrong. But yes I have noticed the shifting is very strong and it just plows through the gears and that is what I figured with the Tow PAckage it may naturally shift a little stronger.

And as for the check engine light that is very weird how it just went off and that is it, and the way the RPMS were jumping it just blew my mind. But Thank you for your reply this has helped me a lot:D. If anyone else has any idea with the CEL feel free to reply.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) set when the check engine light lit up is probably still present, but not a current condition. Some of the auto stores will read the code for you without charge. You should get the DTC # because it is a symptom of a problem.

Good luck.
