Ok, in my 94 Limited I have a US speedometer cluster that reads MPH on the top and KPH on the front

Purchased a Canadian customer (same 94 limited) that has the KPH on the top and MPH on the bottom.

Does anyone know if the US/Canadian speedometer clusters from this year are calibrated by face plate - can I switch out my face plate with the canadian one and have the MPH read accurate on the top numbers (which used to be KPH?)

Thanks

should switch no problem ford made them for US but modified the center spedo cluster for metric system

You can swap them. Not a problem. The miles will be different & by law you need some sticker on the X that says the cluster was swapped & miles are not actual. But that's not all that important.

Ok, here is a picture of the Canadian Speedo and more about what I want to do

If you look at a US speedo for reference you will see that on the US one, the numbers at top are MPH and the numbers on bottom are KMH

On the speedo above the numbers on top are KMH and the bottom are MPH

What I want to do is put this gage or faceplate in my truck and have the top line of numbers read ACCURATE for MPH. I can have a small label printed to put over the km/h-MPH that will have the MPH-km/h.

I assume if I just pop the faceplate off of the speedo above and put it in my truck it will not match correctly as far as calibration as if you look at the km/h markings on the speedo above they do not match the position of the km/h on the US speedo.

Trying to figure out what possible way to do this????

You swap the entire cluster. Not just the 1 gauge.

You swap the entire cluster. Not just the 1 gauge.

Problem there if I swap the cluster, it is still be driven by a US speedo cable/gear. The gauge will not match the actual speed.

160 kmh = 100 mph
It does'nt matter which side of the border you're on
The speedo will be the same but the odometer will be in km for the Canadian one
If you put the American face on the Canadian speedo the odometer will still be in KM. and vice versa

He wants a poor mans 180mph speedo...

It CAN be done....I was making 120mph speedos from 85mph speedos on the 78-88 Cutlass.

Any place that specializes in Speed Recalibration can take care of it for you.

www.tacomaspeedometer.com is a local place, but you can just as easily send them the speedo head as shown.

There's not a whole lot to the 1st gen speedo. There's the gauge, & then the speedo cable that goes into the trans, or X-fer case & then goes to a speedo gear.
It's all mechanical. I do not see being able to get the KMH numbers on top to read accurate to MPH.

If all you want is something that says 180, then use that gauge & just follow the bottom MPH marks & memorize what speeds are what.

The Speedo 'head' is identicle from MPH/kmh and kmh/MPH...ONLY the location of the kmh/MPH in relation to eachother...

The CHEAP way to do this (but not the RIGHT way) is to get a speedo gear that has less teeth....whatever the math comes out to be....

The Odometer and the trip-meter will be WAY off, and your computer won't like it...they have a speed govenor, remember?

The RIGHT way to do it (and NOTHING is adversely affected) is to have it re-calibrated. Period.

I would like to have it recalibrated. But is this possible with the 1st Generation mechanicals? I could take the FACE off of the Canadian gear and put it on my US mechanicals and have it recalibrated (if possible) and not have to worry about the truck mileage gauge. Just was told it is not possible to recalibrate these --- or is it?

You might ask first about recalibrating the speedo. When you have a place to take it, decide on differential gear ratios and tire sizes. You don't want to correct the speedometer and later alter the accuracy with different tires or gears. You might change the speedo gear to slow the needle down as much as possible before calibrating it. Regards,
