Hi all
Its been awhile since I have been here but I am back and I really need some help. My 1992 explorer sport with the 4.0 V6 finally gave up the ghost on the original A4LD tranny after 300K miles. I decided on a Jasper rebuild. After spending 1900 bucks and 500 dollars in labor to R&R, when I got the car back, the car is STILL exhibiting symptoms which were there before the tranny was replaced:

1)weak 1-2 shift OR delayed shift (when cold rpms rise to about 4K before shifting)..warm it shifts much lower in the range...

2) when car shifts into OD at around 50-55mph....there is a SERIOUS shudder...However, when the car shiftds back into 3rd gear, the shudder disappears

I took the car back to the mechanic and he still has the car. He's telling me that the car has a slight misfire and that the misfire will cause the tranny to sometimes shudder. He replaced a so called bad sparkplug today. # months ago, I replaced all 6 plugs and they all came out tan. I put my code scanner on it both KOER and KOEO and NO misfire codes! He wants to dig deeper into it next week saying that it could be bad injectors? The car has been running well except that when it rains out or its damp, the car seriously misfires until it warms up then it runs fine. Prior to spending 2600.00 I was getting ready to drop a new set of 8mm spark plug wires on it as I think the ones on it now are bad. When the car is warm, there is NO misfire yet there is that OD shudder. The shudder is there regardless and it happens at 50-55 mph in 4th gear. There is also a slight shudder coming off of first gear..but very slight. I have a remote transmission filter installed in the car as well. I have NO idea what kind of transmission fluid the mechanic installed. When I asked him if "soft shifts" are normal for a remanufactured tranny, he said YES and that over time, they will firm up. Can anyone shed some light on this issue for me? I can't be without a car for another week as this is my primary mode.

Thanks

Something is obviously wrong with the trans. My bet is the pressures are all out of whack. The shudders and soft shifts are not typical. Shudder=bands out of adjustment maybe, but probably and internal problem or low pressure. Late 1-2 shift= sticky governor or something wrong in the VB. Soft shifts= pressure out of spec or adjustable vacuum modulator that hasn't been dialed in.

Either way it is not right. I would not put too much work into it if it is under warranty or you're just going to void the warranty. Injectors have nothing to do with this, and the soft shifts are not normal. You are probably right that you need new plug wires.

I really don't know what kind of advice you are hoping for. If the tranny doesn't work perfect send it back.

P.s. if you want people to reply it helps to specify what year, engine, model, 4x4 or 2wd etc.
