New guy here but I could use some help. Truck is a '96 XLT with a 4.0L. Tranny very slow going into forward gears..anything from a few seconds to maybe 10 seconds. Shifts are a bit soft at first but tighten up within a couple of miles. A few days ago it would barely move in any forward gear. After sitting a few days, all is OK....minus the delay. All gears work, including OD with no apparent slippage. Today, drove into a gas station, put it in park while still running. Pumped gas....put in drive.....barely moved. Reverse is always good. Later, put in drive and was fine, except for the delay in engaging. Any ideas? Thanks, all.

First thing is to check your fluid level and its quality. When was the filter changed? Check fluid when hot in park.

let's start with the fluid level and last change and filter..... and go from there.

Fluid is new...

I'll check the level when I get home. The filter should be new, as well, but I can't verify that. I'll post as soon as I can find out. Thanks.
