Hey fellow 4x4'ers:

My overdrive has been out for sometime now on my 1993 Ford Explorer 4x4 and I have had enough. I know some of you may be thinking that it has something to do with the "push button", well mine has the "OD" position selector on the dash.....there is no button that has to be pushed inorder to engage overdrive. I have decided to take a look at the vaccum modulator valve this upcoming weekend. The reason I believe it is the Modulator valve is because just before the OD stopped working I heard a loud "POP". I believe this pop was the diaphram bursting within the Modulator valve, but I could very well be wrong. I would appreciate any words of Wisdom/Warning concerning this issue. I know I need to take a look at the vaccum line going to the modulator valve in order to see if any transmission fluid has been sucked into the line. As far as taking the valve off the transmission I know nothing of the matter, nor do I know what to expect once I take the modulator valve off (I do know where the vavle is located). I know the part costs around $26.00 and I wish to keep it that way. I would hate to get the thing off and then find myself having to give my truck to Ford and then having to fork over a couple hundred or more. Thanks for your time and I hope to hear your advise soon.

Todd

I know of one other person on this site that was lucky with this symptom (besides us).. For us, the overdrive went out after I replaced the heads.. There is an electircal connector on the xfercase/tranny.. I think it is on the left side.. (it is outside of the tranny).. If your really lucky.. the connector came off..

if the modulator went you will have tranny fluid in the hose that goes into the intake manifold..

I just replaced mine on 94. I dont have the od putton.
I had to remove the cat in order to get to it. There is one nut holding it on with a bracet. Do check the things mentioned in other post. It not to hard to replace just hard to get to. I would replace the o2 while got the cat out easyer to get to.

Iggy Flywheel:

If I were to go ahead and replace the O2, how many would my 93 take, one or two?

There are 2 should replace both but the right side one is hard to get to. Right side unplugs from the back of the motor have to lay across the engine to reach it. I put a zip tie around the new o2 wire and the old one before I unplugged it. I also screwed the sencor in first so the wire was not all twisted up.
