I just recently noticed this with my Alpine R12 subs. These are the older style. They have not been abused at all, but I just recently noticed that this happend. I did not see it a few days ago but it is obvious now.

I want to know what this is, if it is normal for subs of this age, and if it is a problem/how to fix it.

Thanks!

How old is the sub? And how loud do you listen to it on a daily basis? I seem to 'over use' my subs compared to some people appearntly.. But I like my loud music heh, and I've had a few subs just fall apart, namely the voice coil though, rather than the surround. Did something possibly hit the sub while it was on? I've also put holes in the surround of one of my P2 rockfords because someone threw something in my cargo area...

I could recommend a very ghetto fix that might work, but I'll wait to see what others have to say first lol

Sub Repair

I recently got a pair of the exact same Alpine subs withthe exact same problem. The surrounds came apart from the rest of the speaker. What is your suggestion for fixing it? I don't know the age of the subs or how loud they were used on a daily basis but they appear to be in great condition aside from the rubber surround separating from the rest of the sub

That is wierd that it happened to you too, but with my alpine E12, it works fine. This hasn't happened to it. Maybe a design flaw with the R's?

Is there an actual hole under the surround? or just peeled back from the cone? Either or.. I'd just stick some epoxy in between (one that wont eat the material of course) and let it set for a while before using it again. I did that on one of my old P1s and on one of my buddies kenwood subs and they held together fine. The voice coil went in my P1 before the epoxy gave way, and it sounded fine, if not exactly the same.

I went to home depot last night and picked up some epoxy. After mixing it and applying it generously to the contact surface of the rubber and the cone I let it set for the time on the package and took it out to my truck. I started with the bass and volume very low then gradually turned it up to see how it would perform. It works just like the one that had nothing wrong with it and there is no loss of sound or quality. Easy fix that anyone can do.

the older R's are known for this problem. Epoxy and silicone do the job

Glad it worked out for ya.

Pretty common for the older types R. Cause is usually a combination of hard pounding, low temperature and the glue rotting / failing with age. It doesnt help if something hits the front of the sub.

Glad you got it fixed but next time it happens again try some pliable extra strength contact cement or something silicone based. My friend used regular expoxy and it ended up crumbling parts of the cone where the glue was on (after a few weeks).

It might also help to put a cover on it to avoid bumping the cone. These covers came off dub speakers. Mounting holes match perfect
