I did a lot of searching and reading last night and found some very interesting information regarding the first generation Explorers and their transmissions.

But I still have some questions. Is the A4LD the transmission used in the full-sized and sport Explorers? Are they interchangeable?

Since the Aerostar uses the A4LD is this a direct bolt in to the Explorers? What about the Sports?

What other transmissions can be interchangeable to a 1992 Explorer Sport? Can I bolt a newer Ranger or Explorer transmission to the First generation motor? Is this a direct bolt or will I need to alter some things?

I'm just looking for options and any and all information would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Cory

the a4ld is in rangers /aerostars with 4.0 engines .chevy makes a transmission called 700r4 with a little adaptaion it can be used on the 4.0 .
ask brooklynbay about that ...he's the guru in that department .

all first gen explorers used the a4ld's this includes sports to eddies/limiteds plus the xlt's ...weither they were 4x4 or not .just the tail shafts was different for the 2 wheels models compared to the 4x4 models .

you asked if they used it in full size trucks ...well the full size i'm not sure of but i do know the that the a4ld is basiclly a car transmission so i want to say no for the full size trucks.

personaly i would love to have a plain jane tubro hydromatic 350 in my explorer if it would bolt up !

The A4LD was used in the Explorer until 1994, and until 1995 in the Aerostar. The 3.0L ,and 4.0L models have different parts (bell housing, torque converter, tail shaft, tail housing, boost valve, check ball configuration, etc), so try to stick with the same engine/transmission configuration. The 88-up valve bodies have 2 solenoids.

Interesting... I'm going to have to do some research into this. If I can ever build up the 4.0 and eventually supercharge like I like to, this may be the tranny for the job depending on it's reliabilty. I knwo the A4LD would go bad very quickly.

You need the kit(s) from Advanced adapters.. Bkenny (sp?) and myself are both running 700r4's.. I know others are too, I just can't remember the names of them..
