I finally got my tranny out, and the first thing I noticed was the front pump was VERY loose. So I pulled it off, only to find the bands loosen up, and also found 2 metal guides that were loose (basically center left and center right). I am not altogether certain there is any thing wrong with this pump, but I have searched and searched the site for how to replace or install this front tranny pump.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Haynes is no help either.
Thanks! -DW

DW do you have the PDF transmission manual? Also what exactly is loose in the pump? Are the mounting bolts loose? All you have to do to mount the pump is put the bolts in loosely then align the pump with the alignment tool then torque the bolts down.

drdoom, I do not have the PDF. Is it available here?

When I took off the 8 blue bolts to remove the front tranny casing, I assumed the first exposed part is the pump? There weren't any bolts, it looks like this circular part with 2 bands surrounding it was the pump? Never been inside an Auto tranny before. This part was very loose, and seems to be held in place by two metal guides on each side. This is what seemed wrong to me. I'll add pics since I'm not explaining it very well. Thanks - DW

Ok, I am a dumb-*** What I thought was the pump was actually the clutch. I never actually took off the pump, just noticed the clutch was loose so pulled it to investigate. Now I will be searching for how to properly re-install clutch.

There is only one band I know of (thought there would be more) and I only see the two metal attachments for the band. Doesnt look easy, but what is :angryfire:

Doing trans work is more about the removal and installation of the whole trans, than the internal work. If you have it out, it's definitely best to rebuild the whole trans.

They take specialty tools, so without the tools and experience, it's best to locate a shop that will rebuild it feasibly and who you think you can trust. "Bench building" a trans is far cheaper than paying a place to R&R the trans and then build it, on a bench. The R&Ring of the trans is the part that takes the longest, and they charge you a lot for that. So a bench build price should be very reasonable versus the whole job.

If the transmission had any issues, then there are likely some amounts of debris throughout the trans, and completely disassembling it is the only way to clean it up. The clutch drums all have two seals in them which require special tools to install. Those seals are the weakest link in a used trans, besides the clutches. They also trap material behind them if there is any. So the seals need to be replaced, and that's where you have to decide about paying someone, or buying the expensive tools and learning how to do it.

Thanks Don, But this Explorer just had a used motor put in and I did nothing to the motor. Installing the Tranny last was a work around because the TQ wouldn't seat. I have no interest in keeping this explorer, just want to get it moving so I can sell it.

Right now the only issue I'm having problems with is how to re-install the clutch assembly correctly. There are two metal guides on each side (center) which holds the band in place. Nothing I do seems to make this band tighten up where I feel confident enough to re-install the tranny to motor on truck. Any suggestions? Any guides to Clutch pack install you know of? Thanks! -DW

DW I believe you can download the manual in the transmission sub-forum, from the sticky threads. Best wishes.

If you prefer you can just watch it on YouTube.

Is the youtube link in the sticky forums? This site changed, and I'm still trying to find the sticky posts

No. You will have to Google or search on YouTube.

If you did not remove any great amount of the internals, it should be minor to reinstall what came out. I am not familiar with the 5R55E yet, I have to do mine very soon. Standing the trans up on its tail helps a lot with the pump or the last parts.

There are two bands in them, which do have adjustment bolts on the driver's side. If you get everything in it minus the pump which is the last part, if needed you might tighten the band as much as it will to hold it centered, install the pump, and after installation then readjust the bands.

Hey Don, my research shows two bands also. One is the OD and one is the "Intermediate." I assume both have clutches too, but I'm not going to dig deeper into the tranny to deal with the intermediate. It looks like all I need to do is find a way to attach the OD band correctly (this is the part that confuses me with those two metal guides in the pic above), and then tighten. I never even took the pump out. So yes, not a lot of internals were even touched.

I've spent over an hour trying to find an install guide and something on youtube with no luck yet. At least I'm not laying under the truck :banghead:

Put the band in then place the struts in with needle nose pliers. If one of them has an "A" on it that one goes on the servo side.

For a reference book, try to find the ATSG manual, which are very common and based on the huge Ford manuals. Most people who do any of their own trans work, they buy those, which used to be under $15 each. I've used a couple of those, and they are great for pictures of vital components, for locations etc.

Thanks guys. I got everything together and ready to mount tranny. Easier said than done in my gravel driveway on an incline! -DW

Very good, and the gravel incline sounds rough. I use big pieces of cardboard on my garage floor or driveway. But it wouldn't work so hot on a gravel incline.

I use carpet under plywood. But safety is paramount. I have the front end up on ramps, the rear has two jack stands right near the wheels, but that isn't safe enough for me. I also have 2 pieces of split firewood (Oak) fit snugly under each rear wheel.
Redundancy = safety. -DW

That's thinking, make it better etc.
