I have a 2000 explorer, 4wd, 6cylinder, with 90,00 miles on it. It had been driving great until the other day I exited off the interstate and when I had slowed down to a stop, the car was shaking and the engine was running very rough and almost died. Since then, if I am in park or stopped at a light it continues to shake and idle rough and at times shuts completely off if I dont rev up the engine. I changed the MAF and the IAC but they didnt help, the check engine light has been on. Any ideas what else could be wrong? The codes involved the AIT, which I believe is integrated into the MAF for my model. Thanks for any help!

What is the exact code(s)?

-Drew

The last code that was read was P0113. It seems like every time i put in a new sensor another code pops up.

Sounds very much like a vacuum leak.... get under the hood and listen for a hissing..

The P0113 is indeed "IAT circuit high input". Since you've already replaced the MAF, look for the IAT specific wires being shorted, maybe at the MAF plug-in......?

This code shouldn't cause those idle symptoms however. I'd go with Glacier's vacuum leak diagnosis, and take a hard look at the brake booster. Especially if it stalls after pressing the brake pedal to slow down or stop.

I went ahead and replaced my tps last night, but there was still no improvement. When I am driving I think i can here a hiss coming from the drivers side of the car. I got down underneath my dash and thought i could hear a hissing noise....but it could just be engine noise coming through the firewall. I agree now that it must be a vaccum leak....I am just having no luck locating it.

Drew, with the engine idleing, stick your head under the dash and press on the brake pedal with your hand. If you hear a change in the hissing noise while doing this, the brake booster is bad.....

I tested the brake booster and it was bad, so I replaced it and had the codes reset. The explorer is running better, but it still chokes and sputters at stop lights. After the codes were reset, the check engine light was off for a few miles and then popped back up with the same P0113 code that it had before. Any ideas what else could cause this code to keep popping up and messing with my idle?

Drew, the code P0113 is IAT circuit high input. Sounds like a shorted IAT sensor or shorted wiring to me. I'd look at the MAF/IAT plug-in for shorted terminals. I remember reading somewhere that Ford has had trouble with those plug-ins in the past.

I've no idea how that particular code could affect the idle though; unless maybe the IAT wiring was shorting to the MAF wiring through the plug socket (or related wiring).....?

Just a thought, can you unplug the IAT sensor and see if there are any changes in performance? When the computer is missing data on some sensors, it MAY go into a safe mode to compensate for the lack of info. I'm not totally sure if this applies to the IAT though.

I took my explorer to ford yesterday, it turns out the rough idle was being caused by a hole in the side of my upper intake manifold. I had a hose pop off the egr pressure sensor a couple weeks ago that I didnt notice for a week or so. I guess in that week there was enough hot air coming out of that hose that it burned through the upper intake. My check engine light is still on for that same p0113 code. Because my MAF is new, is there a way to test the actual plug that plugs into the MAF to see if it is bad?

Vacuum leak! As suspected.

I am not sure what you are asking, you want to check the connector?
