1997 with SOHC engine and 5R55E tranny.

My Explorer has developed a ringing / whistling noise. It only happens while it is in gear and at idle. When I give it gas, it goes away. It's getting louder, and when sitting in line at a drive through or at a stop light it is VERY annoying. I believe it is comming from the tranny, but can't pinpoint it exactly from the driver's seat.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Mine whistles in idle also but it does not seem as loud as yours and it sometimes rattles but it goes away on acceleration. From what I have seen this is a fairly common problem. I dont know jack about repairs but I looked around on ALLDATA and thought maybe it is the Camshaft tensioner which there is a recall for. If this is what it is, it is annoying but it does not have any negative effects other than being annoying as hell. Hopefully someone will offer some suggestions because like I said Im no mechanic, good luck.
