Help with vacuum manifold and hoses (not shrader valve)

help with shrader valve
Is the shrader valve on the driver's side of the intake back near the firewall?

I've been having accelaration problems along with misfire / sluggishness at 65 in o/d. After checking the plugs and wires last night, I heard an air leak.

There are two outlets on the back side of the valve - one has a rubber cap, the other has a hose that appears to have hardened and broken off. Problem is that I don't know where the hose goes to?? When I plug it with my finger I get rough idle. When I remove the cap from the other one it doesn't run right either.

Any advice on how I can determine where those two outlets are supposed to be connected? Does a new valve come with a drawing of which hoses connect to it?
Thanks...

shader valve

the shader valve is on the passanger side of the plenum that the air intake hose goes to. shader valve is connected to the fuel rail that goes to the injectors. It have a valve stem like on a tire. What you are discribing sounds like a vacum lines that are on the back side of the plenum by the brake system. One of those lines runs over to the fuel regulator that would cause it not to run correctly. I would get a hayes manual and check the routing.

I have the Hayes manual and can't find the routing in it. If it is in there, do you know where?

Also, the part I'm describing is on the driver's side of the intake back by the firewall. It has 3 rubber hoses coming off of it and maybe an electrical connection. I'll check it out again when I get home.

The part you are describing isn't a schrader valve. a schrader valve looks like a tire inflation valve ( A/C lines have them and also 1 is on the fuel rail.
Yours is a vacuum distribution manifold (a small "tree-like" tube ) on the drivers side on the intake manifold directly above and a little bit back of the PCV valve. Is this correct?
Most of these lines including the electrical connection has to do w/ the cruise control/servo motor circuit. Does your cc work? Where did the hose fall off? At the manifold? Try looking at the actualor which connects to the throttle linkage. On that vacuum manifold itself, it doesn't matter which hose goes where. A vacuum is a vacuum is a......

Here's more info on that vacuum fitting. I was attempting to give you info from memory. A mistake for me!
There are several vacuum hoses off this vacuum manifold fitting. a large 3/8 for the power brakes . A medium size 5/15 inch hose for the cruise control (if you have cc). The other ports are all 1/4 inch. One goes to the fuel pressure regulator. This is on the fuel rail, passenger side near the oil filler cap. The other goes to the bi-metallic valve in the air cleaner. (This is one of the two hoses going into the air filter cover). BTW these 1/4 hoses look like electrical connections to some but they are very small diameter vacuum lines . Hope this helps. Also some are plugged w/ caps. Buy some new caps and change out the dry-rotted ones.

Yep. You're right it is some sort of vacuum tree. Now my problem is this: (1) One port had nothing on it so I capped it. Not sure if it had a hose or where it might have been connected , (2) the other has a hose that is broken and I still haven;t found the other end. I'll check the places you recommended.

My Cruise control does work. The engine is running worse now than before and is putting out a foul smell. Left it parked today and drove the supercrew. I'll work on it more tomorrow.

Thanks a ton for the information - I bet it'll save me $$'s.

Foul smell probably is because one of the vacuum lines goes to the fuel pressure regulator. Trace the hose back to the vacuum "tree" and make sure it is connected. Probably better to use a new vacuum line. That one is very small diameter and could be plugged or dry-rotted. The outlets that don't have a hose, make sure they are capped.

It was the line to the fuel regulator. I've reconnected it and capped the others. Seems to have cured most of the power loss, but now I have a consistent miss and it stills smells funny although not as bad.

Any ideas?

Inspect the spark plugs. What happens when your fuel pressure regulator isn't working is too much flow enters the engine. They could be fouled. Also dump a can of that fuel system / injector cleaner in you fuel tank. Good luck.

Replaced all the plugs on Sunday. The fouled one ended up being the toughest to get to, but it seems to have fixed my problems. Running smooth again!

About 2 weeks ago I ran a can of BG44K through to clean out the fuel system and carbon buildup (great stuff!). I don't think I need to do it again, do you?

Now that it's running good again, it may be time for the air filter replacement from KKM.

Thanks for your help OEANWORKER.

Yes, the air filter is one of the most neglected, yet VERY essential components of any engine. Do I think it's time? I think it's time for a good road trip!!!! Good luck!
