I am swapping the body from a 1964 f100 onto a mountaineer frame.
Its a 1997 5.0 AWD mountaineer.
I have a 302 I have bored and stroked to a 331 that should be close to 400 hp.
My goal is to have as few electronics on the vehicle as possible.
The motor will be carb'd and I plan to use a BW4406 T-case.
From what I have read, the 4R70W would be a good option for an automatic transmission, especially since my mountaineer already has a working version in it. But it is electronically controlled. Was there ever a mechanically controlled 4R70W?
If not, what trans would you suggest that will mate up to my 302 and BW4406? I haven't purchased the 4406 yet, so I could change that. I just know what all its going to take to swap that into the frame and know I can do it without custom driveshafts, so I'd like to use it if I can.
Edit: I do have a T5 from a 1992 Mustang GT bolted to my 302 at the moment. Would that work with any transfer cases? The truck body was originally a manual so the clutch pedal is currently still there. I just thought an automatic may be simpler to set up, not having to worry about clutch pedal assemblies to actuate the fork.
Thanks in advance. This site has been very helpful in planning this project so far.
