1995 XLT
Hey everybody,

I have a 1995 XLT and I can not get it to start. It turns over fine, but it just will not start. Exactly a week ago I had the same problem. I got a new battery and it was fine until now. The one exception was that it hesitated a bit when I tried to start it in the cold yesterday.

The alternator is a year old, and the battery tested fine.

Can anybody give me some suggestions as to what may be the problem? Also, does anybody have an idea how I could just get it started one more time to save me a tow charge?

Thanks!

First check to see that the fuel shutoff has not been tripped. It's up against the firewall in the passenger's side of the truck. There's a box at the top of the carpet with a re-set button on it.

If the truck is turning the motor over ok, it could be several things. A bad fuel pump, extremely dirty fuel filter, bad cam or crank position sensor, faulty PATS system...the list is long. I'd try to hold the throttle slightly open when you crank it. If it starts then, it may be a bad IAC valve.

It could also be a bad fuel pump relay. When you turn the key to the ON position, do you hear the fuel pump run for a second or two? If not, check the FP relay, and inertial switch.

One of the most common problems with Ford products and the cheapest to diagnose and fix is the fuel pump relay. After you have done the usual check for fuses and the fuel shutoff as mentioned earlier, check to see if you can hear the fuel pump. If not, find the fuel pump relay in the power distribution box on the drivers side of the engine compartment. Give the relay a fdew taps and attempt a restart. If no joy, swap the relay with another in the box that you aren't needing (A/C?) and try again. The chances that your problem may be in the fuel pump relay are very high in X's.

It may seem like a silly response, but it was my issue. I had replaced the battery as well and it would turn over the engine but not start. Check the connections on the battery. I had to replace the ends on my cables going to my battery because of severe corrosion. The problem ended up being that the new mounts on the cable ends had came loose. After finding the problem and giving them a good tightening, voila. I hope this helps.
