Please help. For about the past three to four days, my truck has started to run a little bit warm, but barely enough to notice. I since have had my oil changed and they did a top off of all fluids, and I checked up after them to ensure everything was full. However, today on the way home from work, The needle on the temp guage started to 'surge'. It didn't show that the engine was necessarily heating up, because in the span of about 3-5 seconds it would go from a regular operating temperature to the max on the guage and the light would come on, then it would drop back down to normal. This happened several times, and seemed to occasionally be linked to slowing down. My first thought was that it was heating up due to less air movement due to lower speeds, but that wasn't the case as it heated up moving at speed just the same. The problem is that I have absolutely no idea what could be wrong here. I have plenty of oil and coolant, the radiator is not clogged, and the fan is blowing plenty of air. I can't figure out what could cause these temperature surges, or if it's just the guage that has gone bad. If it is the guage, I still don't know how to fix it. lol. If anybody has any ideas as to what the problem may be, please respond as soon as you can. I need to try to figure out the problem and fix it in the next 5 or so hours before part places close. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your thermostat.

what he said!

If you have never changed one before use caution, it's not hard but....

1) let the engine cool completely, hot coolant will scar you for life and hurt horribly.

2) be cautious when removing the screws (I broke one and had to drill it out, no fun drilling a hard bolt from a softer intake).

3) get a thrmostat that runs a little bit hotter, like 190degrees (could give you a 1 to 3 mile increase in gas mileage).

Thanks for the quick responses! It was the thermostat, I got it replaced that night. Just a little burn, no scarring. once again, thanks!
