hey al i know that after reading your posts on the subject of mpg that i need to know if i am figureing out mine correctlly ....

today i went a took a long drive to visit family members and mine being a 94 has a 19.3 gal tank....did a fill up before departing so....

at a half tank my trip odometer reads 171 miles so if i do this ....

171x2= 342 (342 should be completlly empty)

342 divided by 19.3 = 17.72 mpg

is this right ?? the roads i took were also hilly and curved so would it be safe to say that if i were takeing a highway trip then my mpg would be higher?

thanks for any advice you can offer ,i know i could read your posts but i just figure that you being a expert on the subject you can tell me what i need to know .

thanks

I would just do this, since eyeballing halfway on the gauge isn't that accurate

When you completely fill up, reset the trip odo

Next time you fill up,

take (trip odo) / (gallons put in) = mileage.

There is only one way to calculate mileage.

You start with a full tank and drive till fillip time. To get MPG, you simply divide the miles driven by the number of gallons used ( the amount you added to refill the tank ).

fill up then drive it all out till next fill up ...would it be a safe bet to keep a 5 gallon gas can in the truck... so i can fill up and drive till i'm completlly out of fuel .....went out then just add the 5 gal can in and then go fill up my tank and add the 5 gal amount to it ?

i really would like to know what mpg my truck gets but is it the only way to do that is to run full to out .

that make seance??

edit : sorry for the confusion but when it came to word / math problems in school i'm not the best:rolleyes:

Al, what was your best MPG gain in a single modification? I'm getting about 8 mpg :(

You don't need to run down your tank all the way to calculate mileage. Just do it the way Al and I said, you can fill it after 100 miles and calculate. It doesn't matter.

No, you do not need to run it our of gas, nor is that prudent.

The calculation is miles driven divided by gallons of gas used.
You could stop and refill at 1/4 tank if desired.

k got it ,thanks i'll do that.

If you are truly getting that mileage ( ~ 8 MPG ), then you have some serious issues that need to be addressed ( read: repaired ) before warring about mileage mods.

Good luck ...

i don't even keep very good maintenance on my Ex and i still get about 15mpg. i can't even imagine 8mpg

My trans. is WAY bad, so it rarely sees 5th gear...that should be replaced soon. I just did the thermostat and fuel filter, but wasn't sure about the O2 sensors or the EGR. What would come next (besides the trans.) on your list, Al?

hey all did a mpg check today ( filled up) and i'm getting almost 20 mpg :D
(19.75) !!!! i got to say that almost as good as my 2005 colorado (2.8 4cyl)

thank you every one for telling me the correct way for doing mpg ...man i can't belive it i thought was getting like 10-11 mpg  .
iguess the new injectors, maf, tps, and a 5 oil changes (since i've had it) really paid off !!!i think maybe now i'll try cleaning the o2 sensors and see if i can't beat that ....( i'm gunning for ya al :D ! lol )

cheers !!!

Its imperative to fix whats wrong before doing anything else.

Good luck ...

Check the fuel pressure regulator. Mine was putting out 90+ pounds.

Just went through that 8-10 mpg, idles high and rough. Running out of gas was the first clue. Almost happend twice.

showing codes 66 = MAf out of voltage range and code 42 = No O2 switching. Well the 02 sensor was smoked with carbon so it couldn't very well talk sense to the MAF.

There is no code for a bad reg since it's mechanical
