my wife decided to give me her explorer since she wants to get a sedan instead anyway. i have a few questions/concerns about the 98 explorer from what i have read elsewhere

1: is the engine that much of a problem with the timing chain everyone i ask says it is just an exploder which does not leave much to be desired.

2: what possible mods could i do to it mainly want to go fishing/camping with the kids. so spotties roof rack etc

3: i hope i can have alot of fun in it

Welcome to this forum! The 4.0L V6 SOHC is the engine with the timing chain & tensioner issues.

that is the engine in it so not sure what to do now. how often does it **** itself we have had the car for a year and dont know if it has been done yet

ok i have another question. if i change the timing chain and other things related to it (if it still has the original timing chain in it) will it still have the timing chain problem that these motors have? or was it that when they built these engines originally the timing chain and tensioner was ****.

You could replace the timing chain & tensioner now, but it will have to be replaced again eventually.

yeah but was it that when they built the engine the problem happened. so no matter what i do even if i replace it will this engine always have the timing chain issue? as in did they use a **** part etc?
