I own a 1995 4-dr, 4wd xlt that has about 193K on it.

Transmission seems to be having some problems. It just doesn't feel right. It's an auto, but it feels like a clutch that's slowly going (I'm more used to 5-spds.) Once it suddenly and completely gave out, wouldn't accel, and the O/D light started blinking. I had it towed to my guy who said there were some seriously leaky seals and almost no fluid. He replaced the seals and filled it, and said keep an eye on it. The O/D light went off after a few days, and it seemed to be much better, fluid stays normal and light stays off. It's been about 3 months since then, and now it just doesn't seem very responsive at all, doesn't shift when it should, up or down.

My concern is this: my wife and I just found out we're going to be 1st-time parents next summer, and she's going to need a new car in the next several months. This means the Explorer stays in the family for awhile. I'm all too happy about that, but I have the feeling I'm going to need a rebuilt transmission before too long.

I live in the DC area. I guess I'm just throwing this out there in case anybody has any advice when it comes to this model/yr Explorer, and rebuilt transmissions. I figure with a new tranny (and maybe some new tires) it's good for another 100K. But maybe I'm living in a dreamworld.

Thanks in advance,

JN

Welcome to the site:chug:

I'm going to move this to our transmission forum. I suggest you take a look at that forum inparticular the "sticky" threads at the top which outline many of the most common problems with your trannsmission. Here is a link to that forum: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=109

o/d light doesn't still blink

should have been more clear. the light is no longer on. i just feel the difference when driving.

thanks

Most of the auto trans. in the 2nd gen Explorers aren't the best. 193k is a lot more than a lot of people get out of the transmissions, so it sounds like it's on it's way out. I'm no expert though.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the baby.

If you need a rebuild, figure on about 2k. Try and find a place that will properly diagnose it. When it 'gave out' the one time, was the engine reving, and it just wouldn't go into gear?
