Hi all from the land down under!!
It's great to find some info on the explorer at last.
They are not very popular in Oz and carry the nickname exploder due to timing chain and gearbox problems.
I have had mine for a month now and two weeks have been spent in the workshop getting the chains replaced!
I still like the old girl and I'm going for the TT and shackle lift to improve her off road capability.
Everyone here drives nissan patrols and toyota landcruisers.
So I'll try and make a difference!!! ;)

Hello everyone, just joined the the site today. I previous owned a 1999 Explorer Sport, and now a 2007 Limited. Ford has come along way on engineering a good ride. Just wanted to say hello from South Florida!

As BrooklynBay said, Welcome to the forum....get ready to pour your drink, pull up a chair, and be prepared to learn WAY MORE about the Explorer than you would ever want to know....

Now I see how BrooklynBay has so many posts....LOL

Welcome to the forum! Hope you can find lots of good information!

How much it cost you to get the chains replaced? i am in australia too and trying to prepare myself for this problem in my newly aqcuired 98 XLT...

$3000 - $3500 that is what ford will charge.
I got it done on warrenty so there was no charge!!
I saw the mechanic who did the work and for the parts including the special tools for the job no labour cost was $1800.

Thanks, even though thats very good news! I am hoping i can somehow find a cheaper way through the info on this forum but its not looking good...
