I have a 1998 2dr Sport 4x4 4.0L V6 and im wondering what my options are for a re manufactured engine and transmission.

What transmissions are interchangeable with the 5.0L Engine? Whats the difference between a 4x4 engine and a 2wd engine? Do i need to by a 4x4 engine? Since my Explorer is 4x4. I thought only the transmission would matter. Can i buy a 302 5.0L Engine and use my current 4.0L transmission? are they interchangeable? Thanks any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the site, if you have a v6 explorer the only replacable one is a v6 tranny, the 5R55E and engine combination depending on your vin number.. If you have a E in the vin then you have the SOHC, if you have a X in your vin its the OHV. The trannies in the E & X are interchangable. The v8 unfortunately is not an option for you unless you do additional work like wiring & computer hardware. Then you also need to deal with the transfer case since the v6 & v8 models do not use the same type.

welcome
