1997 limited (gone)
Hello folks;
I just found this forum a few days ago. Great forum! I have looked through a bunch of the threads, but could not find anything about the problem I have with my explorer.
First, let me say that I just bought my explorer a few days ago after wanting one for a couple of years.
It is a 1997 limited; with just about every option except an electronic toilet paper dispenser.
Specs are as follows: v-8/automatic/awd/air suspension.
The problem I am having is a clunking or thunking noise directly behind the glove box/airbag area. It does not seem to coming from the engine comparment. It occures at a regular and constant pace. it is not very loud, but can definitely be heard unless I turn the radio up to cover the noise.
Today; after sitting all night, when I drove the truck to work, I did not hear the noise. Tonight, on the way home, I turned on the heater and had it on automatic control and the noise started up again and continued even after turning off the heater. It continued all the way home; about twenty miles.
Has anyone ever had this problem; and if so, how were you able to determine what the cause was and how did you fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help offered.
George

Hey George! Welcome to the Board!! You'll find a lot of information about your Explorer. I have the same problem. I'm gonna ask my dad to drive it while I look for the source of the sound today. I'll keep you posted. Again, welcome aboard!

Hi Billy;
Hey, thanks for the welcome to the forum! If we have the same problem, I would love to know if you find out what it si. I can hear the noise when the truck is sitting still; in park; moving; It only stops when I turn the motor off. It is definitely somewhere in the dash, though.

Wow! Really?? I guess my problem isn't as bad as yours then. Sorry I didn't carefully read it. If the noise only comes when the heater/AC is on, I believe it is a fan motor. I maybe wrong. My problem is that whenever I drive over a rough road, the clunk starts then stops after the bumps. So if anyone have any ideas please help me and George, thanks!!!

Is it a steady kinda noise? All I can think of is there is a fan back there for the auto climate control system, could be hitting something...

Hi Stephen;
Yes, the noise is pretty steady and constant. The thing is; it happens even when the climate control system is turned off. I had the same thought when I first heard it. The noise appears to sound like a small electrical motor running very slowly and hanging up on something on every revolution. I just keep hearing this clunk........ clunk........ clunk......and it is coming from directly behind the glovebox/airbag area of the dash. Wierd.
