HID in 2005 Sport Trac

DonaldBrown: that sure is good to hear. Oh and by the way, we do not keep spares of bulbs anymore, we used to when the HID kits we carried used to cost an arma nd a leg, nowadays you can keep a whole set as a backup because they are so cheap. also, in our experience, the lifetime (number of working hours printed on the label) the manufacturers give is usually for all the components, bulb, igniter, ballast, so its not wise to stock up on the bulbs alone, also, its very expensive to buy bulbs alone, in fact, its too cosly to purchae parts independent of each other, say bulbs go for $95.00 per piece, and i am sure you got your HIDs for less than $150.00 , so see my point, you get bulbs alone, it will cost you $190.00, and that is without the ballast and igniter. So if you have not yet purchased the spare bulbs, please take my advice into consideration. Here in the Philippines when one bulb goes bad and its within the warranty we replace the whole thing, so you dont get headaches and all looking for problems in a lot of parts.:)

So far I purchased everything off ebay for pretty cheap. I have not gotten bulbs yet and may look into purchasing another kit. The quality of my kit is probably not that great, seeing as how I only paid 55.00 for it. Also, I went to my buddy's parents auto parts store to get him to adjust my headlights for me and we found out my adjustment rods were broken. Any clue on where to pick these up?

I've never seen the rods available on their own, let alone any of the adjusting hardware. You may need new lights which can be had for relatively cheap depending on what you want (new vs used, OEM vs aftermarket etc).

My rods were broken too before I scored my projectors. I had aftermarket "Diamond Cuts". The adjustment hardware with those lights is oh so flimsy.

celly: projectors on an ST? wow! me like, me like a lot! can you tell me where you got those?:)

I don't have a Sport Trac. I've got a '99 Eddie Bauer. I got them through a recently completed Group Buy via this forum. I think there are around 15-20 users with them now.

My favourite mod in a long time.

I haven't seen similar projector headlights for any Explorers other than for 95-01 (4 doors) and 95-00 (2 doors). There are actually 2 different versions of them, with both versions available in black or chrome. 410Fortune is the only EF member that I know of who has the other rendition.

Those definitely won't fit the ST, they're for the Explorer only.

Well, the ST is an Explorer, but I know what you meant. :D

The headlights only work on the model years I mentioned in my last post. Sport Trac came into existence in '01 so I probably should have excluded it as well because it is a "4 door" after all.

:rant: wish they made projector headlights for the ST, they would have looked really cool. :) those are definitely nice projectors.

When I turn on my headlights, the radio starts to get fuzzy. If I have them off the radio works fine. Has anyone ever had this problems with HIDs?

ya that happens when my fog lights are on it kinda sucks so i just removed all the hids all together they didnt work like i had wanted

how old is the battery in your truck? When you turn the HIDs on did they flicker or something? If they did, then the battery may not be receiving the proper charge. The ballasts should isolate the spike in electricity that the HIDs produce, because remember they do not operate at the usual 12volts, they operate under the same volts as your typical a/c lights, that is they have very hgh voltage. also, check the connections to make sure they are all tight. keep us posted.:)

ramren16: I believe donald said earlier that his ST does not have fog lights.

the battery is less than two months old, they do not "flicker" they come on a little bright then go down a little bit

Are your HIDs connected directly into your OEM harness or you do have a separate relay harness drawing the power directly from the battery? Fli

A harness is a good thing and can be had for cheap if you don't already have one. It should eliminate any problems you notice re: having HIDs on. Flickering is not a good thing and can toast your ballasts.

When they turn on, they should go flash, then u will notice a little sort of loss in brightness, then go back to its original brightness and stays that way, that is how non-German ballasts react, so I guess you got the Korean, Taiwan, China ballast thingy, I got the same one myself, strange about the radio, you do have the stock radio right? What you can probably do is go to a radio installer, and see if they have an extra noise supressor that prevents electrical noise from interfering with the radio. radios, in particular alpine and pioneers, have a little black thing that sits in between the red main power wire and the radio, its a noise suppressor or something, I think pioneer has one you can actually buy off the shelf. You see HIDs use ballast that are not DC, they are actually AC, and what the ballasts do when they are connected to your battery is they convert the DC from your battery to the AC required by the bulbs. I think this is where the noise comes from, well that is assuming all your connections are tight and secure.:)

That's what they do! Thanks for all the help I will recheck my ground wire to the battery to make sure it's tight!

Hey guys-

I'm looking to get an HID kit for my 2005 ST as well. Where is the best/cheapest place to get a full plug and play kit? I've been seeing ebay, but I wanna make sure I get a good brand. I've been seeing HIDEXPERT and HIDplanet as well. Input?

ST05: if this is the website you are referring to http://www.hidexpert.com/ i read up on them, and they seem to offer good information. I 'm a bit concerned as they do not have a land line, you can only contact them through email, anyway, they seem to promote the really expensive hid line, like denso, mc collough, etc. that suits me fine, but in my experience, have installed a looooooooooooooooooooooot of hids in cars, vans, trucks, etc., also having tried the really expensive kits, i can easily vouch for the quality of the ASIAN hids:thumbsup:. my first hi install, it was on my van, the left bulb cut out at the three year mark with an average of around 2 to 3 hours of driving every night thats roughly 2200 hours +++. well all I can say is dont go for the really expensive kits:thumbdwn:, you will just be wasting your money, just get one thats made in korea, im not a Korean or anything:D, its just that we noticed that hid kits coming from Korea seem to have better quality control. I seem to be getting a bit hot under the collar here and need to cool off........:D:roll::salute::p:

ST05: hi, sorry for the emotional outburst:p: anyway, all hid kits in asia are basically the same, they are re-badged one way or the other, just make sure you get one from a good seller, HIDs from Asia usually carry a year or 18 months worth of warranty. Oh, and by the way, try to get the kits that came from Korea, they have better quality control over there. as regards the wiring kit, someone posted a link that showed the wiring kit with relays in it, that is what I use, its easier and simpler, makes installing the HIDs pretty simple. Just a word of advice though, make sure you secure all connections properly:thumbsup::D HIDs last longer when the wiring connections stay put.:D good luck.
