using 4wd on pavement is bad, thats a good way to break something. And yes explorer's 4wd does make alot of noise when turning and such even off road. Though my t-case was shot every time i touched the gas in 4wd it would make a ratcheting noise. I replaced my t-case with a manual one and havent really had any problems since.
