high oil consumption after rebuild

First, I am a female who can change oil and a battery, but that is the extent of my mechanical abilities. I had a cracked head on my 92 Explorer XLT 4.0 after the quick lube left the radiator cap off. $1255 later, I had a new head, a resurfaced head, head gasket set, intake pla(??) gasket, coil pack, spark plug wire set, new spark plugs, new fuel injector, set of new head bolts, and a valve job. This was at 108,000 mi. A couple of days after I got it back, it started knocking.
Another $1550 for a bottom end motor rebuild and crank shaft oil and filter. They took the motor out and took it to a machine shop. The day after I got it back, the brakes went out because the line developed a hole and all the fluid ran out on the way to a funeral. I put brake fluid in it, but that lasted about a mile. That cost another $102. Then two days later, the heater hose went. I threw a "Witch Fit" on that one. It was against the serpentine belt. They repaired it at no charge in my drive way.
Two days later, the oil light came on. It was a quart low after 300 miles. The guys at work told me that the oil consumption may be high for a while, so I just kept an eye on it. I took it back after 1500 miles. They found a few minor leaks they tightened it, and told me to keep an eye on it. At 2500 miles I took it back again, they sent it to the machine shop and the guy there drove it for about four days and said she's right it's using oil.
I was going on a two day 800 mile trip. They told me to drive it, just keep an eye on the oil. They were also concerned that I was just putting oil in it when it didn't need it. They said wait till the light comes on. When I left on my trip it was 1/2 qt low (I always check on flat surface cold engine). I put 1 qt in while I was gone. When I got home it was still full. I thought maybe they were right, I just needed to get it out on the highway for a while. About three days after I got home, the light came on again. I called them, the first thing they asked me was if I was just putting oil in it when the light came on without checking it. They thought maybe the light was going bad.
When I sent it back to the shop two weeks ago, it was at 5,000 miles since rebuild, and has had 12 qts put in it. Yesterday, they told me he had it all apart, but could not find anything wrong. He was still working on it.
Does anyone know why it would use all this oil after the rebuild?

Do you notice a lot of blue smoke when you are driving? Blue smoke is oil black smoke is fuel. If you have used 12 quarts of oil in only 5000 miles there would be a big cloud of smoke. Typically if you see blue smoke on acceleration it means that oil is getting past the piston rings. If it is on decelleration it means that oil is getting past the valve seals. It is normal when an engine is fresh for the oil consumtion to be a little high, until the new piston rings wear a little to fit the cylinder but that usually goes away after a couple hundred miles. This type of oil consumption is most definately abnormal.

Have you notice any oil on the ground when you park? It is possible that they damaged the rear crankshaft oil seal when it was installed. Also it may be that the oil pan was not installed properly. A gasket may have been pinched or not lined up properly

The bottom line is that there is no way that a fresh engine should use that much oil. It seems that your mechanic is asking a lot of stupid questions because you are a woman. Once they put it back together make sure that you do not let them send you away without this fixed properly or it could end up costing you again. Don't pay them any more money either. This should be warrranty work because they did something wrong when they rebuilt your engine.

Good luck, keep your chin up.

Thanks for answering Paul, there is no smoke while driving, and there are just a few small drips on my drive and the two spots that I park at work. I also have three other cars that belong to my kids that park in the same spots in my driveway and sometimes I drive their cars to work too, so it is possible that these small drips are from their vehicles. Especially my son's truck. Half of the teeenagers in our small town park in my drive at one time or another.

Well now, I'm no expert mechanic, but you've certainly got me confused and scratching my head!
If you've used 12 quarts, and it isn't burning out of the engine in smoke, and it also isn't dripping into puddles under your SUV, then just where in the heck did it go???
Any ideas, people? If you can answer this one, then maybe you can also help me with figuring out where those matches to my single socks are. I think they may be getting sucked into a cosmic vortex in the spin cycle and then spit out as extra coat hangers that mysteriously multiply in my closet....

Seriously guys and gals, just where else COULD that oil go??? There's no way I see; there's gotta be some piece of the puzzle we are not hearing about yet....

Thanks for answering Gerald. I read over my posting again. One thing I didn't mention in that looong story, when I took it back the first time before they rebuilt the bottom part of the engine, I told him then that it had used a quart already he said that was normal till the gasket settled down. I reminded him of that when I took it back the second time after 1500 mi.
My mechanic did the top of the motor, but for the bottom half, he took it out and took it to a machine shop.

Smells like Fisherman's Wharf. Somewhere between your mechanic and the machine shop is a screwup. Oil 'rarely' disappears without a trace.
Get the engine steam cleaned, then place a sheet of white posterboard underneath after you park it (hold board in place with rocks so it doesn't blow away).

Sometimes mechanics are like doctors...they won't testify to one another's screwups.

Good Luck

I'm not sure where the oil is going in this case but just for everyones info if the catalytic convertor is working properly it will burn up alot of the oil so it's hard to detect visually.

my engine made oil dissappear, and engine coolant, as if it were david copperfield.
the heads have been replaced along with a re-machining of parts and new gaskets. well see if i run into your problems friday when i pick it back up.

Thanks guys for replying. I never thought about the catalic converter cleaning up the oil...
Mohawk, I sure hope you don't have my luck. I called them yesterday. They were bringing it back to me. It has used 1/2 qt in 350 miles since they put it back together, but they want me to drive it again for a while to see if it quits. I threw a fit. They called me back and said they would pull it completely out and replace everything again but it will take two more weeks. That totals at least 10 weeks without my vehicle since the ordeal started. Wish me luck. Olive

Well guys, I got my car back, it was gone for six weeks. They decided it was the intake manifold. He said it was throwing oil out, and burning some of it. I have only had it a few days, and only put 200 miles on it, so I don't know if it is fixed or not yet. If that is not the problem, I'll be back to pick your brains some more.
