Occasionally I have noticed after I shut off my XLT there appears to be a high pitch noise, very faint but noticable. It eventually quits after five minutes. I don't have too much concern over this, just wondering if other have noticed this and what maybe the source. any ideas?

May be the radiator fan, my wifes fusion fan runs for few minutes after car is shut off. Never noticd it on my edge or explorer. Will check net time.

Its not fan or whistle sounding, but rather a high pitch.

I hope you're right. I also drive with my lights on all day, could be the bulbs cooling off? Its very faint, almost like your ears are ringing, so faint its tough to identify the exact source

Yeah, I've had that. As long as it doesn't sound like it's a fan spinning down - I think we're fine. Others have reported the same thing on the Edges as well.

the only thing you have to worry about is that some users have reported that the radiator fans make a whining noise upon spinning down before dying (and subsequently leading to overheated explorers).

I think the noises we have experienced are different. I know that I used to monitor my temp gauge constantly and I used to occassionaly run the explorer in the garage and pop the hood with a flashlight to make sure that both fans were running. Never had a problem - both are running just fine.

To sum up, I think its normal.

I have heard it also. It seems to turn off after a few mins. My guess was it had something to do with something electrical and not a fan

spitfisher,

It could be pressure evening out in the A/C system after the Explorer is shut down, which would be normal. Thanks for everyone taking the time to add your suggestions. :)

high freq noise Explorer sitting in garage

I had this high freq nose after shutdown and last night it did not quit and the battery was too low to start the car in the AM... It is now at the dealer... hope they can find the problem... My vehicle is a Rowe Ford in Wesbrook, ME... they will look at it on Monday.

We had this on our Ex, and after having our fans tested (they failed) and replaced we never heard it again. Interestingly, I mentioned the same noise to our dealer about my 2011 Edge and they told me there was no problem with the Edge fans....
