High pitched sound coming from car speaker while off. Why?

First of all, the car is a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer with all factory stereo.

Talking to a friend of mine and was told the battery went dead over the weekend when it snowed. Old battery and cold, so it was its time anyway. Battery was replaced, but now when the radio is turned off there is a high pitched noise coming from the speaker in the rear door. The only way she knows to make it stop when exiting is to turn the car off, turn headlights to off(from auto), open the door and then take out the key. Seems a little weird I know, but if she doesn't do that after turning the car off the noise will keep going after she leaves the car.

I dont have access to the car itself, so I am just looking for ideas that I could give her as to why this would happen.
Other than just disconnecting the speaker, is there a way to fix it?
Would it kill the battery if left to make that noise?
