High speed = hurt transmission?

Yesterday I was driving home on the expressway in my 93 explorer sport when i found myself racing around with a fat chick in a hyundai. The needle went far past 85 it was almost to the neutral "N" so i figure i was going about 105 - 110mph. Ever since i got off the expressway my transmission has been acting funny when im going uphill. It feels like its jumping between 2nd and 4th gear. Also when i'm not going uphilll it feels like it goes into 4th gear faster and i find myself driving at lower rpm. I checked my transmission fluid ( i have not changed since i bought the truck a year ago, no idea when it was changed before that ) and it was about an inch over the hashmarked "do not add" area. What could driving at high speeds have done to my transmission? Should i flush the tranny fluid and refill it, and do u think that will help?

Well, first of all, did you make sure to check the fluid level while it was idling in park? You could be getting a false reading if not. Also, if you've had it for a while and never flushed it, I would suggest doing that anyway. Flushing the tranny never hurts.

Driving hard by itself will not hurt the tranny if it's in good shape. However, it can hasten failure if the tranny is already headed there.

you have the infamous A4LD, so its likely that your tranny is bad. check your fluid color. red=good. dark red/black=very very bad. also, as j602 mentioned, you should be idling in park when you check your fluid. fluid flushes by themselves never hurt anything, but if its on its way out, a flush can dislodge gunk that is in your tranny and move it somewhere else, hastening failure. so if u do get a rebuild, make sure you flush the fluid yearly.

if his tranny has never been flushed would'nt doing so now actually cuase problems. I was told once a tranny has gotten to that point the dirt and grime is actually whats sealing it up so if you flush it he will actually make it leak.

My transmission was acting completely normal prior to this I had never had a problem with it. Do you think it could be the computer or something else? the thing just seems like it cannot make up its mind when i am going uphill, or if i am dropping down a gear to excellerate.

you should smell the fluid to if it smells burnt then you have problems. I am a transmission mechanic and see alot of this. Usually when it reads way over full it means a pump problem but yours is moving so the pump cant be out so make sure your truck is running and in park then check it again. Flushing arguements can go both ways. We personally dont have a flush machine we can just service transmissions but we have had people come in saying their ford trans worked fine until it was flushed then they started notcing problems. I havent been in the business to many years so I cant diagnose your problem but start out with the fluid check and go from there. another option is to call around and see who offers FREE check outs and see if they can drop the pan and look for gunk in ther pan or worse yet see if you have metal in the pan. A decent shop wont charge you for a pan drop we dont so im sure you could get it checked out for free or worse the cost of a service.

My 94 acted the same way after a high speed trip to Orlando. 80-85 for 160 miles straight. Then back again. I left the X alone for a few days & all was ok, & has been since. I had just gotten a service, & the fluid was still red & smelled fine.
