Homemade Roof Rack

Hi,
Anybody make any cool homemade roof racks? I have a 98 and want to make one for a somewhat affordable price. I have an inflatable kayak and some other stuff i'd use it for...nothing crazy or hardcore offloading.
What materials should I use? PVC?

@BKennedy is the first person I can think of that made a complete roof rack and I'm pretty sure he EMT.

I wouldnt tey pvc and it can barely carey its own weight once it's in the sun.
