Horn Beeps On Exit

Horn beeps twice on start up

My problem has just started on my 2014 Explorer Limited. It beeps twice on start up. If I start it with the remote, it beeps twice when starting it with the FOB. It does it as well if I start it from inside the vehicle by stepping on the brake and press the start button. Have had this vehicle for almost a year with over 21,000 miles and this started this last week.

Is it telling me something? If not, how do I turn this off? Can not find anything in the manual.

I doubt you'll find anything in the Owner's Guide about turning this OFF since it isn't supposed to happen in the first place. The only thing that I can think of trying is to do a negative battery cable disconnect for 10 minutes or so. Reconnect and see if it still does it. Be aware that by doing this your transmission will have to 'relearn' its shift points and the idle and trim settings will also have to be 'relearned'. I don't think a Master Reset will have any affect since I don't believe the issue is MFT related. But of course, I've been wrong before. Being that it is under warranty, my first move would be to take it to the dealer first and see what they say. At least it will be documented.
Good luck.

Peter

Thanks Peter,

I will be taking her in for servicing in a week.

I agree with this being a safety feature. However why not just write the program that says if the key fob leaves the proximity of the vehicle a timer counts down and the engine automatically shuts off after a few minutes.
Trust me. If I've forgotten something in the house and intentionally leave the vehicle running 2 chirps isn't going to make me turn around and turn the vehicle off.
The safety part to cover Fords ss is such that let's say The driver runs into the house (just for 2sec for something they forgot)...the kids are in the vehicle which is inside a small garage. The driver gets side tracked and tied up for much longer than they anticipated (took a phone call, taking longer to retrieve whatever it was ect..). Car keeps running and kids die of carbon monoxide poisoning. We get it! But Ford fails to realize that 2 horn chirps from initially leaving the vehicle won't do **** other than annoy their customers.
Again, Ford. Why not just program into the cars firmware. Keyfob leave vehicle proximity = start timer. If timer exceeds X minutes = shut off engine.
This can be done...when you start the vehicle by remote start you can select a time interval for which the vehicle will shut off automatically if you don't get out to the car by then. Just tap into that somehow.

I always leave the vehicle running when I stop and walk across to the other side of the road to get my mail. I have learned to keep the door from closing all the way so the horn doesn't chirp. Personally I see this feature being more of a nuisance than a 'safety' feature. They didn't have it on the 2011 and 2012 models so why was this added?

Peter

Can IDS be used to turn off the horn-honk when a door is closed while the vehicle is running?

The horn does do the double chirp even when the vehicle is turned "off" on occasion. It did it to me the other day...again. The problem is when it does it you have to go through and think the sequence of events which you really weren't paying attention to. I remember backing into the driveway, and something like turning the vehicle "off" then my wife left her passenger side and closed the door while I was still in the car or perhaps I might have just slightly opened my door. Anyway she opened her door first but the closing of her door was slightly before of after my door opening. I had the keys in my pocket and the only keys in range of the vehicle.

The point is, it does it for more than one sequence of events with the car both on and off.

1. Dear Ford. Please provide a detailed explanation of this feature. The kind that one would normally find in a vehicle manual which you "failed" to do!
2. Please provide a method to disable the nuisance feature and if there isn't one...create one.
3. Some engineer actually sat down at a round table discussion "signed off on" and executed this new feature. What was going through their head to create such a feature that really p!ss's off your customers.

#2 would be greatly appreciated but I'll almost bet my house it won't happen and #1 is expected.
I can understand not printing a whole new manual every year for a couple of small changes but somewhere in some file at Ford you must have some sort of amendment list for those small new features added or removed from each years production runs. Ford rep...can you get this and post it here?

To get a reply from Ford you have to write to the directly. Don't expect an answer here. As for the 'Horn Chirp', Riley posted in another thread that apparently this has now been federally mandated in the U.S. Not sure what that means here but you can almost guaranty that there is no way of disabling it unless you disable the horns themselves.

Peter

What an excruciating thread to read! Don't mean to downplay anyone's experience, but what's the deal with complaining about this? EVERY car I've owned with a proximity key has some sort of feature that lets you know when the fob has left the vehicle and it's still running. It could be a horn chirp, some beeps, whatever... My Kia Optima has a very long, sustained BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP when this happens, much more "annoying" than the horn on the Explorer. It could be worse folks. It's common practice with cars nowadays, and in my opinion a very good feature indeed. At least with the Explorer you can still lock the doors with the engine running when you're outside the vehicle (not the case with many vehicles I've owned). Good news for my dog so I can leave the a/c on when I run inside somewhere real quick.

Tony

My 2014 XLT does not do this. I actually tried it when I read the thread and no chirp. Is this just a feature of the push button ignition?

Yes.

We own a 2014 Sport. When we stop at a location, I shut the vehicle off, she gets out the passenger door, when it closes the horn sounds twice. I'm in the drivers seat with the fob in my pocket, my door hasn't opened.

Why?

VERY Irritating!!!

Stop at a convenience store, she gets out to get some snacks and beep beep!, pull into church, she gets out first, beep beep!

It's not an instance you want to leave the door ajar!

I want to turn it off even if I need to sign a waiver!

The horn should only sound when the engine is running and the fob is away from the vehicle. Does the wife by any chance also have a fob with her when she gets out? Just curious although the horn still shouldn't beep if the engine is off.

Peter

No. It has even sounded when she gets home at midnight from work. Shuts the engine off, grabs her bag (fob in bag), exits vehicle and when the door closes, beep beep!

Me, Dogs and the neighbors now know she's home!

started doing this about 3 weeks ago.

You could try a negative battery disconnect for 5 - 10 minutes. That has cured some issues. I don't think it has anything to do with the MFT. A disconnect will mean that your transmission will have to 'relearn' its shift points.

Peter,
Took Explorer in for servicing and they reset so that it does not chirp.
Thanks,
Art

Peter,
Yes, if I exit with the engine running and all doors closed it will chirp. Since I usually only do this when getting something out of the back, I open the hatch while exiting.

What Kruisin is describing is absolutely correct. Happens to me all the time. If driver is inside the vehicle while car is running and passenger leaves the vehicle first. horn beeps twice. I say beep because it's not a slight low volume chip, it's a full volume beep!
F'n annoying and and the engineer/s who sat at the round table discussion deciding to make and deploy this feature should be hung in the town square.
