horrible alternator noise

I replaced the battery cables on my 93, now the alternator is making a horrible noise... why? it sounds like a couple heat shields hitting together, except a lot worse... if I disconnect the voltage regulator the noise is gone.

what kinda replacment cables did you use? LOL

wet cotton string seriously, NAPA cables, they fit perfect, same gauge as the old ones.

Oh I was hoping no one would catch the edits, I initially thought it was the starter, but I took it off, everything was OK, then found out it was the alternator. Going to autozone right now to have it tested.... why would it just go out like this after a battery cable replace... I have re-checked my connections 5 times over.
