2000 ford explorer v6 4.0
I have a 2000 explorer sport 4.0 x manual trans. I just changed the spark plugs, wires, mass air flow sensor and lower control arms. Now it has a awful misfire it didn't have prior. I read the codes and its misfiring on three cylinders. When I hit the gas lightly it bogs down rather than revving up and I have to punch it for it to go at all. Obviously it's not the control arms but someone please help

check 5 & 6

A common mistake when replacing the V6 plugs or ignition wires is to misconnect coil output for #5 to cylinder #6 and coil output for #6 to cylinder #5. The intended cylinders are labeled on the coil pack. Cylinder numbers are as below:

Rear
3 6
2 5
1 4
Front

Another problem is not gapping the spark plugs properly before installation. Some members have experienced problems with newly installed Bosch plugs.

Why did you replace the MAF sensor? Did you install an oversize one or a stock size one?

Thank you for getting back to me. I replaced the maf because I had lean codes and I already replaced the o2 sensors. I gapped them to what the emissions sticker said, and the weren't Bosch plugs I used motor craft platinum I believe. Ill go look at the wires right now with the info you gave me right now

So I checked the wires using your info and they are correct. The maf is oem btw

Are the misfires all on one bank?

Check MAF sensor connector

P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input
P1504 Intake Air Control circuit malfunction

The IAT sensor and the MAF sensor are integrated on your 2000. They use the same connector. I suspect that you have a loose connection.

Connection looks great, trying to clean maf with maf cleaner right now to see if it helps

Cleaned the sensor and nothing. Still reading the same codes. Is it possible the new maf is bad? Also the tps code is coming up

Picked up and installed new throttle position sensor and its still sluggish has just awful acceleration

reinstall old MAF sensor?

Do you still have the old MAF sensor? If so, I suggest that you reinstall it. Low power and stumbling on acceleration are symptoms of MAF sensor malfunction. Did you tug on the MAF sensor wires when installing the new one? The codes indicate it is not connected to the PCM.

Your previous lean codes may have been due to an intake leak instead of a bad MAF sensor. If so, they will probably reappear when the engine starts running right again.

Did you clear the misfire codes for the three cylinders or just not post them in the list?

Unfortunately there was a core fee on the maf so I no longer have the old one. Ill double check the connection of it just to be safe

I got the old maf from the store and reinstalled it cleared the codes made no difference then I reinstalled the new one and can't get the check engine light to come back on. Still very poor acceleration and I'm at a total loss.

I would try swapping the ignition coil and checking the intake lower gaskets if the spark plug wires are in the correct firing order.alos make sure the spark plugs you replaced are not cracked and tight.

But what confuses me is that it did not perform like this prior to the plugs and maf being changed so if I had a bad gasket wouldn't that have been evident before? And is there a way to test the ignition coil?

Check the main wiring harness plug at the PCM.
It might have been disturbed when the work was
being done.

You can test the coil. Connect an ohmmeter to
the + terminal and each - terminal of the coil.
This is the primarary resistance, and should be
about .3 to 1 ohms.

Then probe the paired companion cylinders at
the plug wire terminals. These values should
be about 6-12K ohms, and the resistance on
all three coil pairs should be nearly equal.
