Sounds like a bad CV joint (shaft).

That's exactly what it is - We had a Explorer come into the shop a few months ago with the same horrible sound. Take the shaft out again and try to move the cv-joint part of the driveshaft. The one we took out could not move and would just "break" over and over again by the force of the differential up front. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my 95 explore xl. I put in all new u joints, checked the cv's, and still had the problem. So we finally pulled off the stock transfer case, put in a spare and sure enough, no more popping. Definitly check your joints first though.

mercuryman's is a 97, therefore the only u-joint is at the diffy. And yes, the problem is the cv joint at the t-case, and the d/s needs replaced.

i have the same problem. just bought a 97 AWD XLT 5.0 thinking it was an easy fix. i replaced the front driveshaft and i still have the popping in forward and reverse. any suggestions?
